Wankel engines (aka rotary) operate at a relatively low compression ratio by nature of their basic design, which makes diesel an inherently bad choice as a fuel because of the relatively high compression ratios required for diesel.

I found ths while searching the web:

WANKEL ROTARY currently has a 2-rotor diesel/kerosene engine of this propulsion unit which practically means doubling the 1-rotor performance, however, with an improved power-to-weight-ratio. This LOCR-814 TD turbo with 814 ccm has a power of 70 kW (95 hp) at 6,000 rpm and features the same favourable fuel consumption characteristics and a system weight of only 73 kg (161 lbs.), thus being the world’s lightest propulsion unit for aircrafts using diesel and kerosene fuels. The WANKEL LOCR-814 TDT will be presented in Oshkosh 1998, too and will be available as experimental propulsion unit for aviation as of mid-1999.

So there is hope.
