I spoke about this today with my local buyback specialist at the dealer as well.

He said there is no way for him to contact VW directly, so he would try to call them if a car was questionable, but he had no idea if he'd be able to get a reply from VW right there at the appointment.

He said he would probably let it go through if someone chose the EFT, and send VW pictures so they could deny the car before sending the EFT, that way it would not be his fault if he gave someone the check for a car that was disqualified.

I have 3 buyback appointments scheduled for Jan 9th, and I'm thinking about removing all the doors, just to put this thread to rest.

I'll be the guinea pig, and in the worst case I'll just have to re install the doors, and (Maybe) reschedule the appointment.

I have 3 cars scheduled for that day @ 2:00pm, 3:00pm, and 4:00pm so I might be able to drive back home throw the doors on and bring it back with my next appointment.

duratitus ~~ I for one, appreciate the action on your part:)

If you aree successful, I may go for my ALLOYs

I am glad Sardo is down in Connecticut, and not here. We do not have a local police department.

One person that we know of turned in his car missing the front bumper and headlights. Numerous others, according to the condition thread here on TDIClub, have turned in cars in varying conditions, including missing components, stereos, riding on steel wheels, with significant accident damage, etc.

Or are we looking for the holy grail rolling chassis or custom convertible to get turned in and nothing else will suffice?

I'm not saying that I want to turn in a stripped car. I'm saying that Volkswagen has no authority to turn away a car that is less-than-complete. Saying otherwise is just spreading FUD when we have no evidence to back up those claims and plenty of evidence against those claims.
VW can do whatever they want at a buyback. You think the police is going to show up and force them to take your car? You have avenues to address the situation if you get rejected. Who knows how long it would take to get your money.

In regards to alloys, what can I do if I needed some scratch 2 years ago and sold them on Craigslist?

There's no way I'd be going out to try and buy a new set.

I don't think you will have any issues if you turn in a vehicle with steel rims.

No avenues? You have a rather limited imagination.

until someone actually reports that they've been rejected for something not specified in the settlement, it's all just FUD. Return your cars any way you feel comfortable, as long as they move under their own power.

I have 22 different law firms representing me in my case against Volkswagen, plus a court order in my favor.

The avenues are limitless.......

It's kind of the same thing with the RNS-510, I'd think. Back when people were ditching those because they're so awful, several said they were going to sell theirs after replacing it. I kept mine, with the expectation that I'd put it back in prior to trade-in, but I'd guess that the folks who didn't are going to be turning in their vehicles with a double-din-sized hole in the dash.

I won the lottery? How so?
I planned to own the car for many years, but now it would need a fix (which doesn't exist) and there's always the issue of not having it fixed and my state deciding that it shouldn't be on the road come registration renewal time.
I honestly think VW should be buying it back at MSRP when I bought it.
If your state is participating in this deal, they cannot deny registration to any owner who declines the offer for as long as he/she own the car. If you were planning to keep the car for a long time, nobody is forcing you to do anything. I've a hunch you'll take the offer; you just want to squeeze some more $$ from VW.

VW rejected my TDI

I went to my TDI buyback appt yesterday. My car was rejected solely because it has steel wheels instead of the OEM alloys. [BTW: My TDI is in pristine condition]. Representatives on VW’s “844-98CLAIM” hotline had previously told me (twice) that wheels do not matter and that the only requirement is that the car be driven in under its own power, but yesterday’s settlement rep cancelled my appt, told me the hotline is wrong, that I need to make a brand new appt (= add’l 2-month wait), and that I must bring the car in with the 16” alloys that came with the car. What can I do?

That's nonsense. People change wheels for all sorts of reasons. Your buyback rep is a jerk.

Contact class counsel at info@vwclasscounsel.com, include your VIN and claim number, and explain the situation. If there isn't resolution there, consider the following from the vwcourtsettlement.com website:
If you believe you are eligible to receive benefits under the Settlement Program or that your offer amount is incorrect, you may appeal the ineligibility determination or offer amount calculation to the Court-appointed Claims Review Committee. The Claims Review Committee is composed of one representative from Volkswagen, one representative from Settlement Class Counsel and a Court-appointed neutral who will be called upon to resolve disagreements between the Claims Committee’s other members, should they arise. To submit an appeal to the Claims Review Committee, you must send a written request to appeal to the Claims Review Committee, P.O. Box 214500, Auburn Hills, MI 48321 or claimsreview@vwgoa.com

Your request must include the following information:

Claimant’s name, address, telephone number, VIN of the affected vehicle and Claim Reference Number.
A brief statement explaining why you believe the ineligibility determination or offer amount calculation was in error.
After your claim is received and reviewed by the Claims Review Committee, you will receive a final determination as to your eligibility status.

Schedule with a different buyback specialist.. Get some VW hubcaps and put them on the car.

That's complete nonsense. I have an appointment this Friday at 6:30pm and my car looks similar to DanB36's. I live 200 miles from a dealer. I'm planning to be there by noon so that if there's a problem I can reach the lawyers from the dealership just in case. Two of them have told me to call directly if there's a problem. I certainly am not planning to tow back and forth twice just because some idiot buyback specialist doesn't know what they're doing. I hope you get this resolved asap...

Mine is set for Feb 7th. I dont intend on stripping anything but if I was I would call the dealer it was going into and ask for the rep handling the turn in's. I would then ask here/ him specifically how he is interpreting & enforcing the term "operable". I would then stop talking and let him respond. After his response I would then starting listing examples such as having swapped wheels/ tires, etc and have him respond to that. I assume his response would be the same as turn in day and save you some major hassle and re- queue. If he seems very open to stripped items give him your name, VIN, date/ time, etc and ask him to remember the conversation.

Or you can do like I did........turn it in with all original equipment intact!!

That is my plan too. No intention of stripping anything but the all weather mats and putting the originals back in it.
You monster. Put those all-weather mats back in, and clean them off while you're at it. Volkswagen deserves to get back a vehicle they can turn around and sell immediately once they've applied the fix, and nothing less given their exemplary, entirely above-the-board behavior in the face of such insurmountable odds, valiantly attempting to comply with an unrealistic agreement that they negotiated and signed off on.

Actually, come to think of it, they've given at least 110% in effort throughout the process, and so should we. Buy a few extra accessories to have in there come turn-in time.

I have my appt in 2 days, got a call from the buyback rep today. I mentioned the car is complete but has minor accident damage to rear bumper and fully drive-able. He said that they are more concerned with people stripping cars versus cosmetic damage and that they tend to let those cars with damage slide, but then he asked me to send a picture of the damaged area so he can send to his superiors. I have a feeling they may reject the car. What can I do at this point? should I contact info@vwclasscounsel.com or wait until it the appointment on Friday?

Why did you mention the accident damage to them? You should be good if you just bring it in.

And this is exactly how people abusing the "condition" quasi loophole to make a few extra bucks are screwing over other people.

Now the pendulum will swing way over to the stringent column and rejections for inconsequential BS will happen, like this poor guy and his wheels ^^^^

Even money the buyback rep rejecting for wheels now got reamed for accepting cars missing major panels earlier on.
