Place water in the IC and have it towed to the dealer, claiming water got in the IC when you took a weekend trip to the artic, can i has TSB now?

I know it sucks VW is playing their cards tight, but i'm thinkin this TSB has got to be $1000+ out of their pocket for parts and labor. I wouldn't worry about it until this fall, then maybe some water "finds it's way into the IC" and they'll document and replace it as needed. As least that's my plan.

Well, getting this kit installed on my 2010 TDI isn't going so well. I got the service manager (Mike Szlachetka at Dorschel VW in Rochester) on the phone today.
Sounds like typical Dorschel! I don't know if you'll have any better luck at Vincent VW though. Am going in there for my courtesy service soon, and plan to ask about the TSB then. Like everyone here, I don't want to wait to get gobs of water in the IC and several rough starts in order to prove a problem.

If I'm not satisfied with the email response I get from the Dorschel service manager, I plan to call Vincent's service manager and tell him that if he'll install the intercooler kit for me (at no charge), I'll give him all of my future VW service business.

Does anyone know if Mark Jenkins is still Vincent's service manager?

Do all dealers do a "courtesy" check for new cars?
for those that come with free 36K service, i don't think those up north are included

That makes sense... thanks! In "the old days" most dealers would give you at least the first oil change free, but things are different now.

Does anyone have "official" VW documents about this TSB? (like a pdf or self study, etc.) If you have any information, other than the TSB numbers and photos, please PM me. I want every bit of material I can to shove in my techs face at Dorschel when my car is serviced to prove this is not a bloody "valve inspection." What valve, and where?!?!?! Lots of valves on this car buddy... :p Thanks.

And talking to Vincent VW vs Dorschel may be a good idea... sigh. :(

You know, I wonder if there's a TSB on the NEW intercooler, and that's what the sticky valve TSB is for?

or the first part of the TSB is to check for full operation of the EGR system, then check for water in the IC, then toss parts at the problem. Heck for all we know the dealer just didn't want to deal with it.

What's odd is that Alldata lists no TSBs whatsoever on the EGR system or intercooler, at least in the section that you can get to for free.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I've searched around a bit and I can't find anything anywhere on it. Shady behavior VW??

What we need is someone with access to VWHub and a willingness to lose their job...

But does erWin have any of the US-specific info? Note that it mentions Volkswagen AG, not Volkswagen of America.

I believe it should; BMW's service web is also located in Germany but covers all worldwide models. I will let you know.

Well, the issue isn't dead for me yet at Dorschel VW in Rochester, NY. I just received this email from the service manager I've been talking to (Mike Szlachetka):

"I’ve forwarded a copy of your email to my rep at VW to get his take on the matter and to see how he would like me to proceed and I’ll advise you of what I’m told as soon as I have an answer."

This message was in response to the email I sent him (after several phone calls), where I explained how I almost couldn't get my Golf started last March, but eventually did after a lot of cranking. The email also included a PDF containing the pictures of the kit from this thread.

I'll keep you posted!

Before I even write this post, I'd like to apologize to sgoldste01 for not replying to PMs and posts about this intercooler TSB... I thought our 20 k mile service was going to be about 1.5 months ago, but my mom (her car) was stuck out of town at her mom's house due to health issues (all is well now). So I was waiting for her to come home, then get the service.

Anyway, my 20k service is done, and my HPFP didn't grenade on the way home! :D
****
Results of 20k:
1. Tech said FF canister was clean. No water, and no mention of small shiny bits :)

2. Second successful oil change.. a little messy, but good for a dealer. Proper oil and amount too..!

3. Wheels rotated, steering slightly off center (center the steering wheel, and the car steers ever so slightly right)... tread depth in the front both 7" out of 32" (2.5 feet of tread? lol) this is according to the "interactive vehicle inspection" checklist by the way.. and rears were 6" and 5" out of 32". I don't know why my left rear (according to the checklist) would wear more than the other, but that may account for the odd steering IF they took the measurements and wrote them down BEFORE they swapped tires (unevenly warn rears would now be on fronts) which could play with the camber, etc. I'll see how it is in a few hundred miles.

4. Nothing is broken yet ;)

5.
"Installed: engine oil - quantity 4
Installed: screw - quantity 1
Installed: filter elem (element) - quantity 1"

repeat filter elem three more times ^ with same quantity.

What is a "screw" and four "filter elements? They most likely pertain to the FF canister, but what specifically?

6. Replaced (on our dime) wiper blades (and they didn't change the rear blade  !!!!) and proceeded to charge us $40 for two pieces of German engineered Bosch rubber..

7. No ECU (etc.) or DSG updates that I know of.

8. Car drives just like it did when I took it in, save the wheel issue.

Did not have a chance to discuss the intercooler TSB with anyone unfortunately, so it looks like this coming winter will be a cautious period of observation for me... (sgoldste01, lets stay in PM contact about Dorschel and Vincent.)

What a fun post to type. I love this car :D

*EDIT*
Oh, and for any DPF "enthusiasts" out there, my car was in a regen within 2.5-3 miles of a cold start this morning on the way to the dealer (instruments indicated engine was fully up to temperature when I noticed the regen.. elevated idle..) Ambient temp was maybe 78 F. Interesting (impressive!)

I understand what you're getting at, but " indicates inches, not fractions thereof.

The accelerated wear on the left rear could be from something as simple as an inflation difference. You could have an alignment done, but you'll probably need it re-aligned next rotation. Or you could have a dragging caliper back there.

get an aligment done, you'll probably need it, mine did at 30K. It corrected tire wear handling, and steering wheel cockedness.

Good find - thats expensive!! Add 3+ hrs of labor for install, and you need matching ECU flash.

I'll repeat my words of a month ago - everyone with any concerns should be asking VW for this installation NOW before winter! Don't wait until its winter to start the process, because if VW runs out, well.... too late! :D

That is assuming the kit helps of course.

In my opinion VW should be offering this to all CR's at the owners request - there is no good reason to deny based on lack of history. Many owners were expensively inconvenienced during cross country trips or vacations during winter months. This puts whole families at risk in cold, possibly dangerous and life threatening winter storm conditions, which can easily happen within driving range of anyone living in the US. If an owners asks for it, VW should give them the cold weather IC kit. Clear & Simple - no micro-climate BS.

Can any 2012 owners please comment on presence or lack of this kit in new cars shipping to US, New England, Canada?? Got to be some of you out there now....

I am toying with trade-in and refreshing my ride to probably another JSW - wondering how new cars HPFP and IC systems might be upgraded for the better by now? Or would I need to insist on CW IC as part of delivery? I am interested in long-term TDI ownership but a little spooked by being out of warranty with fuel system and IC issues somewhat unresolved. Upgraded hardware would help the bad voodoo I've been feeling lately? Hmmmm.....

For those that are following this issue - I have updated the first post of this thread to include the following pictures of the IC kit installed on my car ('10 JSW).

The post-IC intake charge temperature/vacuum actuator are circled in red. The rest of the kit is not easily viewed without removing the engine belly pan, etc.

Thanks for the update GR. Will be monitoring closely this Winter to see how well it performs so I can decide whether to press my dealer to install it before my warranty expires.. Keep us posted. Good luck.
