Central Texas got nailed by hail last night. Tore the Beetle up pretty badly. 4" hail and 60 mph winds.

Wife's Santa Fe got it worse.

House windows

Just had a new roof put on a month ago. Total loss. Sounded like cannon balls hitting the house. Those double pane windows just shattered when hit with glass everywhere.

Wow! Just....wow!
Sorry to hear about the damage - trusting everyone is OK, which is the most important thing, but still....sucks to have so much clean-up to do.

Everyone was fine in the house. Moved to a safe area to get away from the hail and flying shattered glass. All cars were parked when this happened. Still picking up glass. Insurance has been good so far as we just remodeled due to a water heater leak and leaked into the house. Using the same roofer who just did the house roof. Already inspected by roofer and Friday the adjuster is coming. The local news was out and filmed my 2007 Tahoe I just bought and rebuilt. No longer pretty after that.

Man that sucks. I fear for this sort of thing because I cannot fit all my vehicles under a roof. I have two in the garage and two more under a carport, and two more under the deck.

House has a Strongpanel metal roof, though, so no hail worries there. Worth every penny.

Ouch, that sounds like a mess. At least nobody got hit with one of those.

I am now starting to wonder what the insurance will propose on the Beetle. Fix it or total it. If they total it should I buy it back and get it repaired myself or let it go and move on with something else? Shame it only has 59k miles on it and nice shape before this. May consider going back to an older restored car/truck for the simplicity of it. I really only needs something that gets me around well. AC a must down here. Must be able to tow my small aluminum boat. Always been partial to the Ford F150 and the inline 6 cylinder, manual.

They'll total it. Buy it back & fix it to whatever degree you're satisfied with. Personally, I would just do the glass and giant divots, and then live with the smaller pings. You're in hail country, so when you take it for a drive, everyone knows the deal.

Yeah, they'll probably total that. But the used car market is nuts right now, so you never know. Probably get more for it that you would have normally, though.

depending on how much they will ask for it to buy it back from insurance I would consider keeping it, it is your car, you ve had it since new I assume, did all of the maintenance right and it might even have the clean title after all, happened to me twice.

Might be a good time to get out and avoid any other future emissions issues. It is a good car though except for the damage. Just has me thinking about things and which way I should go. Values seem to be around $18 to $20k with my low mileage (58k).

Not many out there to compare to... but I'd bet your insurance will value it much lower, and you'll have to fight over it. Almost seems like that's the way it is with a lot of TDIs, always has been. People in general (even in the car world) are ignorant of them.

We had a guy tow a 2001 Golf TDI in here once that had been struck by lightning. And when I mean struck, I mean STRUCK... it vaporized the antenna to a little melted nub and left a powder speckle dust on the roof.

This was a "fully loaded" car. 4dr, diesel, automatic, GLS w/ lux, every option box checked car. In-dash CD player, heated seats, EVERYTHING.

Lightning took out:

Engine ECU
Radio
Cluster
ABS module
SRS module
rear wiper motor
alternator
battery
CCM
FCM

.... and of course that poor little antenna. Car was flawless otherwise. Very clean, well-loved Golf.

The door modules survived, as did the CD player, and that darn TCM (amazing, the TCM is built better than the crappy 01M trans it controls!)

Anyway, insurance adjuster comes out, he thinks right away they'll total it. The car at the time was only 4 years old, and had only 60k miles or so. He felt the car "was only worth about five grand, because shoot, it was only about $12k new!" His words. Idiot. I informed him that the car probably MSRP'd for around $23k, and was easily worth more than $12k right now. And this was a guy who was an insurance adjuster. Someone you'd *think* would have *some* clue as to cars' values in general. No clue. No idea.

... they paid to fix the car. It was a whopper repair bill.

Holy f**k. I heard about that. We only lost power out here and no hail, but I heard y'all had it BAD in Austin. Those fender dents are unreal. Never seen any that big, and so sorry you had to endure that.

Pretty much. I say my Golfs live up to their name. Two of the three look like Golf balls.

@Lightflyer1 - out of curiosity, who is your insurance provider? Some are better than others. I use farmers, and until this year, I've had pretty fair total loss settlements. Geico and esurance give horrible settlements. Had State Farm in the past and they were also semi fair. I say semi, because with State Farm, Geico and esurance, I had to invoke the appraisal clause.

Basically, if you're not happy with the (probably) $hitty estimate insurance provides via their crack job CCC one report (which almost never gets installed options right and lowballs), you tell them you're invoking the appraisal clause. Now, they can no longer use CCC one. Your insurance provider hires their own appraiser, you hire one for yourself. Only like twice has someone ever inspected my car in person, so on both sides, it's usually virtual, but of course, your appraiser would go high on valuation, and the insurance company - it depends. Sometimes it's been the same as what CC One says, other times, higher. Case in point - aftermarket parts endorsement on my 2003 Golf. I brought that up, so Farmers invoked the appraisal clause for me without me hiring an independent appraiser. The value of my Golf went from like $4500 up to $13.5K (the other party's insurance was NOT happy, as they had to foot the bill when arbitration failed them). Or with State Farm - 2004 BEW totaled out in hail a few years ago - State Farm showed the engine as a gasser ($2500), had CCC One change to a diesel, which brought it to like $3400. I invoked the appraisal clause, shelled out like $350 to my appraiser, and ended up getting $5500 after the buyback was accounted for. Didn't have as many mods on the car as I do now, and it was substantially higher mileage than your Beetle.

So say, hypothetically, your insurance's appraiser says your car is worth $5K and your appraiser says it's worth $12K, and neither side meets in the middle. The final option is hiring an umpire. Both appraisal companies agree on a neutral third party appraiser; you and the insurance company each pay 50% of their cost, and whatever that appraiser finds the value is worth is now binding. I've done this once, but most of the time, both appraisers will come to meet somewhere in the middle. Salvage value shouldn't usually change, but some insurance companies fudge the numbers to reflect the higher value. Either way, invoking the appraisal clause will be your best bet.

Geico gave someone i know a great settlement this year on a '14 JSW with 170k. Great buyback price too. Geico covered the guilty b***h who ran him off the road.

His own AAA adjuster, on the other hand, was not only worthless to him, they were negative value, like $2000 negative. They said they were on the case, then kept giving him the run-around, and by the time they finally told him "it's not our job to pursue your claim against geico", it cost him a couple grand in tow yard fees. He still ended up several grand ahead, compared to original purchase price, but it still burns.

That's why I was curious which insurance. Everyone does things different, but from my experience earlier this year with Farmers, I got a set of crappy adjusters myself.

Kinda a shock about Geico, given how budget oriented they are. We once had high winds here that blew a small, untethered metal enclosure over a fence and onto my truck. So they sicked special investigations onto me... TWICE. And cleared the claim... TWICE. And then gave a ridiculously lowball repair payout that no shop could do for that little.

Those bricks on the roof of your car might scratch the paint. Very unfortunate. I have never seen anything like that . Well good luck getting back on track. You should start a Gofundme page and post it on the Forum. I'd be willing to help.

I think he put those bricks after, to hold the plastic, so that water won't get in thru the broken glass

given the shape of the beetle, the smaller dents will add an aerodynamic affect like a golf ball!
free MPG!! :D (sarcasm haha)

Lightflyer, very sorry to see this. hopefully you can keep the beetle, or get another like for like one

I seriously doubt they would be able to find one like it. It's the warranty that I'm really concerned about. Still has over 100,000 mi and years to go. But I may decide to get something else instead and just be done with VW and diesel gate.

@Lightflyer1 : why don't you ask the insurance company the cost to buy back the Beetle anyway? Post it here, with new glass that's a perfectly capable car, maybe someone will jump at it
