Did your local guru that changed the belt have any comment on the condition of the old belt? Any evidence that it actually needed to be changed based on condition? (Cracks, missing chunks, lacked flexibility, etc.)

I'm at 94K and thinking of doing my own TB service. A torque wrench and a few specialty lock pins and pulley holder should do the trick... Isn't Metalnerd awesome for special TDI tools? ID Parts has the TB kit for $329. I'm wondering how that compares to the cost for an indie shop to do the work. I like it that the kit includes new tensioner pulleys and water pump... Also has a new serpantine belt.

TDI timing belts are almost never changed 'on condition' but rather 'on schedule'.
The actual weak points are usually the sub-components that are in-line with the TB (water pump, idlers, tensioners, etc.).

Just want to share. Many years ago, I had the timing belt changed on my 200kmiles 1984 Rabbit, following recommendation from the service dept. Well 5k later the belt skipped a few teeth, and busted my motor....tensioner problem.

Hey all,

Sorry for not chiming in sooner. I didnot notice any signs that the timing belt was weak but now that its done the car seems smoother. Obviously it was a kit installed that replaced all components in that area. We have not had any prior issues with our CR TDI. I do all oil and fuel filter changes. We use PS products when we fill her up. My girlfriend who drives it drives around 140 miles a day on it so I think for a TDI that's a great thing. I'm aware of the issues these cars have but I sure hope ours proves us wrong, so far it has.

The cost out the door with tax and I had mike install a new fuel filter was 947. Dealer wanted 1400. mike did a great job and had the car done in 1 day.
