No TDIs Currently, I have an R36 Corrado. I've had an ALH Corrado swap, AHU Corrado swap and 2003 TDI Jetta
I managed to get 820 miles before the light went off and then I squeezed it until 913 miles. I should mention that over 3/4 of the miles were done at I-95 speeds driving back from Ohio and then in daily commuting. I have an 18 gal tank that I have put 18.6 gallons in 2-3 times

99.5 Golf GLS automatic, 662 miles without a warning beep. I'd estimate I was good for at least 680 until the beep; maybe 690 or even more. I'll try to get an actual. It may not happen until the tourist season is over.

I had at least one tank with 1,000 miles on it before the ding.

Top mileage was 69.8, ~amount of fuel used at ding= 15 gallons.
69.8*15= 1047.

But I don't really keep track of the ding. Since I can get a ding on an uphill, and get the light to go away on the down.

All right, I have to ask, since the PD is way down on mileage compared to the VE rotary pump cars, and I don't think I've ever seen this much even from a VE car, what is your secret? Any mods, special tuning, tires and inflation pressures, driving conditions (mainly speed), etc?

I've no secret. I've no mods, tunings, special tires, or anything else. It is not needed. The one single greatest thing effecting the mileage earned from any car is the driver's driving.

My car lives on the highway or parked. When on the highway it cruises at 55mph for at least 50 miles. Nothing else is needed.

(I mean, sure I coast down some hills in neutral and such, but... somehow I don't think that is the SECRET)

The beep and the little diesel pump light came on at 833 miles for me on Friday. I "gutted" another 19 miles for my personal best tank as reflected in my sig.:D

99.5 Golf GLS automatic, 731 miles to the warning beep - right AT my destination. Question now is, can I make it back home (51 miles) without filling up? How about it guys? I've got 1.0 gallons in a bottle. Do I pour it in before I head back, or go for it? What's the record for automatics?

99.5 is a A4, right? Means at the beep you have ~2 gallons left.

I've driven 50+ miles after the beep with no problem, but I have no idea what your economy is like. Put the gallon in, if you like. I've done that many times even though I've known I could make it easily with what I have in the tank. Just gives you that little extra bit of peace of mind.

Thanks for the encouragement. I went for it and end up at the filling station near home at 786.6 miles. I managed to pump in 15.79 gallons with venting and cramming it in to within inches of the top of the filler. Think I could have made 800?

Could have? yes.

Should have? Probably no.

I mean, there is no real reason other than personal satisfaction to push things. That is what I have to tell myself. In the end, I feel good knowing that I could have gone the extra 15 miles. But I didn't have to. And I don't drive around in circles just to drive an extra 15 miles. That would be a waste. I only drive to get where I need to go. Therefore, I fill when it is convienient.

(oh, all right. I did drive one circle once. 3 miles extra. I was 3 short of my first 1,000 mile tank and had to make that up)

I should have refilled at the ding. The bug died 100 yards from the station with only 620 miles on the tank.

Bummer. Went to the station - bought a container - took 2 gallons back to the car. Took the bug to the station put in 14.12 more!!

I must drive in a way that does not conserve fuel.

Either there is something wrong with your car or you aren't venting the tank. How many gallons do you put in the tank after the light comes on? It should take at least 14.5 gallons.

Talk about resurrecting an ancient thread...

My vented PD wagon consistently gets a comfortable ~600 miles before the light goes off. In the summer it will typically get another 30-50 miles, and on the occasional highway trip it will get 100 more. I never push the issue once the light goes off, why get greedy?

03... Faster than yours =]
My light usually comes on between 600-650 miles... My best tank was on a trip from NY to Rome, GA... Light came on in chattanooga, TN... 802 miles from my house... I made it to my destination@ 867.3 miles, it only took 15.2 gallons.. I could've easily made 900, but I didn't know the area and really had nowhere to go...

Finally a place to call home...

Typical mileage per full-up: 600 – 650 miles.
Re-full at about ¼ tank. Vented, yes and before the fuel light, yes.

Best mileage in 05 Passat stock automatic is 625 miles on the trip counter at the low fuel chime with summer mix diesel.

Sounds like an unvented tank!

Push that little black button at the 9 O'clock position in the filler neck when filling to get an extra gallon or two of fuel in.

Fill until you see the fuel.

last year on the way home from the fest I got 700.2 miles on 16.1 gallons, driving ~70mph on my A4 automatic.

This year I got 41.62mpg on the ride to get Rocketchip stage 2plus & sport mode turned on, and 41.62mpg on the ridge home after getting Rocketchipped. Average 70-75mph, 97% freeway driving

Next month it's bigger nozzles, I'm planning to just have stock nozzles from a manual transmission installed.

The low fuel ding which I thought was pretty consistent at 15.1 gallons burned is now coming on erratically. These last two tanks it's come on at 14.1 and 14.8 gallons used. Either that or the fuel station I'm using has their pumps miscalibrated in MY favor
