What are costs are likely to be when we 6MT people will need the replacements ? Hope not any time soon :D , but just to have an idea.

Hoping that long term cost of maintaining stick is going to be less than the DSG and/or SEL's autos.

Drive it nice, and you should have no problems doing 250k miles or more on the stock clutch. Keep your son or daughter out of it.

a quarter M is a nice number indeed ! :), thank you very much.

But in general, getting to the clutch is a pita in some cars and aint so bad in others. How does 6MT Passat rate in that respect?

On a funny note, spoke a neighbor last nite about tips on stick driving and specifically uphill starts. She is very proud of her skills- what she used to do to keep the car stationary is stay in gear and balance the gas/clutch .... in San Fran !!! :)

Wonder what her clutch and flywheel had to say about that ?

Hi R11.....you know you have hill assist on your Passat, right? Some on here don't like it, I think it is awesome....on a hill, from a stopped position, the car will not start rolling backwards until you hit the throttle, pretty cool, wife is happy with it too.

the hill assist is there and helps for sure. Still, one should be pretty quick getting er going, as she WILL roll backward as you release the clutch pedal .

Surely not an issue for most as we get used to our cars :p

I don't think it's the clutch to worry about but more of the DMF.

VW put out some bad ones in early mk5 days, many 5spds and DSGs required replacement at or around 60K warranty period.

Unfortunatly there isn't that many miles on the 6spd DMF for these CR tdis to say they are bullit proof but everything looks good for now. I have 55K on my mk5 6spd and notice a bit of rattling while coasting in nutral that goes away when coming to a stop, a few have over 120K

But remember with a DMF its not a matter of "If" it's a matter of "when".

My church has a 6 bay auto shop that I volunteer at. We fix up donated vehicles and sign the titles over to struggling families or do repairs free of charge for those with financial issues.

Last night one of the team had a Honda tranny apart and I noticed, wait for it... a DMF.

And was it a diesel with how much torque? those two things stress a DMF more than anything.

How many miles do you have on your 2006?

My 1998 Beetle has original clutch, my tranny went in the Passat at 290,000 KM, it still had the original clutch though. While the tranny was out, I replaced the clutch. A used tranny was $450.00 and plenty around, they go infrequently, the clutches are pretty good too, if you don't abuse them or "ride" them. You will smell the clutch burning if you are using it incorrectly.

It was a gasser; was at top of the lift, so couldn't tell much about the motor. One of the team suggested it was a CVT tranny.
The 2006 will have 196K by week's end... getting a new cam with the TB job in April.

To the OP.. .you should be able to engage the clutch fully in 1st gear on level ground with no throttle input from your right foot, if done properly, without stalling. Once the clutch is fully engaged, then gently give it some throttle in 1st gear. 1st is basically just used to overcome inertia and get the car moving. Short shift it, and accelerate gently and shift at 2000 rpm or less when cold. Occasionally, once warmed up fully, get on it 1/2 to 2/3 throttle, roll your foot into it over a 1 second period, don't mash it, to 3000 rpm while getting on the freeway, maybe 2 or 3 x a week driving to or from work, or in route.

If you drive it like this religiously, I am certain you can get 250k miles or more out of the stock clutch. Use makes a clutch last a long time, abuse shortens it's life greatly. Keep teenagers and young adults out of the drivers seat, and it will last much longer also.

A clutch is less than $1000 - usually by quite a bit... Drive the car, enjoy yourself. The clutch will last for long enough that it's cost is a fraction of a cent per mile driven. Obviously, being a fool will shorten its life.
