Quite a list.
The mobile headliner guy is interested in attending. I have no experience with him. He offered to do my Golf (no sunroof) for $150. Does that sound reasonable? I have no idea, but suspect that is what I would charge, or more.
Dan, was this Will's Mobile Headliner? I had him do my '04 Jetta for the same price. Worked great and I am very happy. Some points to consider, the fabric is a little thicker than OEM (i think it has some foam backing), so for sunroofs this makes the sunroof slide work more against the thicker material. I haven't had any problems so far. Also, for $150 he doesn't do the Sunroof itself or the visors. Those are extra. He also couldn't redo the little cover for the sunroof motor because of the thicker material. I had him cut out a section of good material from the old headliner and use that. Works well, but if your headliner is gone, or thoroughly dirty might be a problem.

Yes, it is Will's mobile headliner. I think I linked to his site earlier.
Ok, sorry about that. Had knee surgery 2 months ago and have been off the forums for a while. Haven't got caught back up on all the threads yet.

I have to be in Charlotte the 30th for my fathers birthday party around noon, but can stop by early if people would like to see my headliner. I had it done April of last year.

He is coming by tomorrow to do my 03 Golf headliner, so there will be an example as well (unless I have delivered it to my Uncle in Florida by then.)

It will be good to see you again.

Finally a chance to get to a GTG. I'ts been a long time since I made a GTG, never to one of Dan's and I am looking forward to going to this one.

For my 98 NB, 5sp -

Stuff I'd like to get done:

  1. Install Sprint 520 nozzles
  2. RC tune (stock clutch)
  3. Headliner
That ought to make my wife think twice before letting me loose on a weekend.

I can help out on light wrenching, cooking etc. Does anyone want me to bring up beverages? We have a world class brewery in Athens (Terrapin) and I can check on seasonals and special batches. Anyway its a good excuse to visit the brewery....

Also - not a sales pitch - but I have some B4 parts and NB parts laying around in my garage looking for a good home. PM me - I might have something you can use.

Ciao for now,

Jim

I can help you with the nozzles IF there is a bench vise available.

I assume you have had the clutch replaced with a stronger unit than stock? with the combo cited above, you will get slippage.

If I do make it I'd like to have my MAP take care of MAF duties as well. Right now I'm driving around with an unplugged MAF so I can get full power but it's hurting economy.

Any word from Jeff @ Rocketchip about a cruise control fix for the '04s that swapped out a 5th gear? I thought I'd ask since I haven't heard back from Jeff and know there may be a few other folks on this thread who talk with him on a more frequent basis. I saw a post by Malone Tuning and he said to "talk to my tuner" about it.

Just thought I'd ask since it would give me a greater reason to come on down in addition to all the fun diesel stuff to see.

Dan,
Do you think that the mobile headliner guy will be there? I need my headliner replaced badly and would definitely get him to replace it if he was there.

Folks,
I had my headliner done by the guy.
He would love to come.
But I am not so sure.

I was not impressed with his work. I was hoping he knew all the little secrets for removing and replacing the headliner without causing any damage. But he simply jerked harder and faster to get all the lights and things clamped to headliner off. He never released one catch. In other words he is a typical automotive service worker.

His material looks ok, but it is thicker than OEM and the visors will not stay fully up.

I think that it is too thick for anyone with a sunroof; I read complaints online about sunroof cover problems time and time again after headliner replacements.

All of that being said, it is probably exactly what you would get from most local automotive shops, both in technique and material. I had two local shops that refused to work on VW's, or other German cars. They did not explain why, just gave me numbers for other local shops.

I pick up my door panels tomorrow; he was going to replace the fabric panels with vinyl for me. I talked to him over the phone about how they were going and he was exasperated with trying to get the vinyl stretched. He was using clamps and heat guns in an effort to get this done.

By the way, I am pretty certain that ValveCrusher is right. Many of us could do the same quality (or better) job that this guy does. Not that I would be interested in doing it.

I will report further tomorrow.

Dan,

Thank you for the very honest review. I will pass. I can do it myself, but time is the only problem lately. I would rather know it's done right than get a shoddy job done. I appreciate it. You're always so helpful.

Is there a bbq plan of action in place?

I know it's summer, and everyone is out enjoying the season,
driving around in our TDi's,
but i was kinda wondering if this had ever panned out?:)

sign-ups aren't as high as last time,
so maybe just a few smoked shoulders, or picnics would cover the crowd?
everyone sign up to bring sides?

OR

what type places are there to eat nearby...I'm only kinda familiar with
chapin

Hey folks,

I'm new to TDIclub.com, but I'm excited about making it down to the GTG.

Is anyone body thinking about driving down from NC together? laundryeater, I know that you and I area pretty close. You up for driving down?

I would definitely be in for making a side for BBQ. I make some mean scalloped potatoes. If we BBQed would we have access to an oven to heat up preprepped food?

On the technical side, would a suspension refresh be too large of a job for a GTG? I could bring my own jacks and tools, but would love a hand. Though I would have to rent a spring compressor if nobody had one.

Calvin,
I don't think the facilities will lend themselves to a suspension refresh. I have already sort of discouraged another suspension refresh job. (edit: but it can be done. Don't count on using the lift for it, though.)

The food facilities will be rudimentary. We will only have any grills and icechests and tables we bring - if we set up to bring them.

I am trying to decide if we should just patronize the local businesses for lunch or if we should bring our grills and so forth for hot dogs, burgers, etc.

Everyone please let me know your thoughts.

Dan, I will vote for everyone on their own afa food...namely
this is a new GTG site , its a downtown location and we really do not know what would be looked upon as kosher by local authorities...
I vote for staying on the safe side , eat locally , help the economy and get a lay of the land , and not discourage a future invitation...if we find out its OK to BBQ etc then we will have the green light for later on...

We are talking to some of our waste cooking oil clients in the area to work out food discounts for everyone that want breakfast or dinner. Lunch is going to be cooked on site.
Dan, I took from this post that lunch had been handled. Is that not the case?

I am not too thrilled about trying to keep a pig from spoiling in July, but I had also tentatively planned on bringing the "grill for the masses" and doing some BBQ chicken halves. That leaves us still looking for sides from a local establishment, I have no idea what's in Winnsboro. Maybe someone local could tell us if there would be a place to get chicken fixin's like baked beans, mashed taters and or cole slaw and whether there would be a place to set up and cook.

Sorry for the confusion, lunch is still up in the air.

We can grill if we want to, but nothing is decided yet.
There will definitely be a place we can set up the trailer-grill, and some tables outside.

As Bill pointed out, we may want to apply the KISS principle here, for the first one in a new place.

I vote for stimulating the locals. I feel they would appreciate the extra business. Does anyones know what's available in the Main street area?

Not a lot of choices in Winnsboro since it's an older small town. My folks and I eat at The Barn Express often. It's a good southern buffet and they also do a great breakfast. They do takeout and can also prepare large sides pre-ordered if ya'll decide to do a cookout at the GTG. It's just down the street in town from the GTG.

Jimmy (Jimbote) has offered to do a show and tell injector pump sealing, and also replace a main bushing. He is familiar with the re-sealing, but the bushing replacement will be a first time effort. Brave lad to do this with a critical audience.

The car providing the injector pump is a 500 kmile plus Mk III. The car has run on WVO for more than 168 kmiles. We'll see if it can drive off (it will be towed in!)
