I would buy one without any hesitation! (1000%) specially if they have the 4Motion option as well...
I was at a dealership in Kitchener or Waterloo about a month ago, and one of the sales guys really liked the gtd as well. Asked him the likelihood of it coming to north america, and he said slim to nil...he said the demand is there but vw doesn't want to bring it over. Emissions issues i guess?

I do hate how some reviews are constantly comparing the GTD to the GTi. They're not supposed to be identical, so why the constant comparisons to the GTI? If it's supposed to be a GTI, why have two "GTIs" on the market? It's supposed to be a sportier TDI, that's it. If these reviews want to get it right, they should compared the TDI to the GTD, in my opinion. Anyways Happy Reading!
Top trim gasser, compared to top trim TDI. What's the issue?

I would compare the 2 also. Pricing will be close. Comparing the GTD to a stocker TDI would be pointless. Would you compare a S4 to a base A4?

VW’s Revamped Golf: It’s More About Tech Than the Look | Bloomberg

For almost four decades, Volkswagen AG (VOW)’s Golf has largely defined the hatchback segment -- as well as VW itself. So with its latest incarnation of the Golf, the German automaker has played it safe, focusing more on technology than the look so it wouldn’t alienate the car’s legions of fans.

Though the makeover is part of VW’s most extensive technology rollout in almost 20 years, the biggest changes won’t be visible to customers. Instead, VW has designed a lighter steel frame that helps reduce fuel consumption by as much as 23 percent and has upgraded the electronics with features such as equipment that can make the car a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot.

VW shortened the lifecycle of the previous version of the Golf to four years from seven to tap the new technology. Volkswagen AG forecasts that the new platform will lower production costs 20 percent as it assembles cars faster with fewer components. The model, due to mark its global debut at an event in Berlin today, uses standardized components such as electronic systems and axles.

Golf VII debuts in Germany

Adaptive cruise control, adaptive braking, more room inside, lighter chassis. And better fuel economy (with the right engine choice).

I wish we could have that engine choice in NA.

Autoblog has pics of the new golf. The first thing I thought when I saw it was Golf IV. I personally like it a lot, the interior looks awesome!

Two big questions:

When is the MK7 Golf TDI going to hit US shores and will it get urea to meet US strict NOx requirements?

I want to see 50MPG again on the window sticker like the ALH series did.

Der neue Golf TDI 62MPG!

VW unveiled the new Golf that will go on sale in Germany on November 10th. It is part of VW's common structure that allows for more parts sharing between platforms (not really a new concept to VW veterans on these boards, but further expanded). This is meant to drive down production costs so that more environmentally friendly and value drivers can be added without having to increase the price so much.

The big kick is in the thread title... the TDI model is slated to have a fuel economy of 62 MPG! It likely uses some of the newer "hybrid-ish" features a like a flywheel or belt assisted start that allows the engine to be quickly restarted after stopping at traffic signals or in traffic jams.

Based in VW's past, I'm guessing that the new golf won't show up here until mid 2015 as a 2016 model. I doubt that it will get the urea treatment since the weight is going down and the emissions requirements can be met without it.

The car looks sweet. I just hope that over the next year or two, VW can prove that these TDI engines can be built to last with quality mechanical components. Between the PD cam issues, trans issues and now the common rail fuel system problems, I am just scared of VW yet I love others things about their cars. I'd love a reliable affordable diesel that has some pep, returns decent fuel economy and has stle and nice interior features. C'mon VW....if ou can do that and improve dealership services, you just might kick some auo industry @zz!

I posted a new news thread that has yet to show up about an article that suggests that the new Golf TDI will get 62 MPG due in part to lighter weight, but I think all of the Golfs will use some flywheel or belt assisted start (FAS/BAS) so that the engine is killed at stops and quickly kicked back on when the accelerator is pushed. Nothing new, really, but gives the TDI a good kick in the pants when it paired, I guess. I am wondering how long it takes that tech to make it to the US TDIs, in general. Honestly, the TDIs haven't made much progress in the past decades... any fuel economy improvements have only made up for areas that would decrease it... at least keeping it fairly even. We need something new to push it back up over what is out there. Plenty of gasoline powered traditional vehicles getting around 40 MPG without anything crazy... just being small and lightweight with a dinky engine. I would really like to see the TDI get to that 60+ MPG mark for all of the cars and 35+ MPG for the Touareg/Q7 without making them into hybrids. Then, they can work on taking it much further with hybridization.

VII generation Golf, revealed

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/09/04/seventh-generation-volkswagen-golf-unveiled-in-germany/

Ladies and gentlemen, your new Volkswagen Golf has arrived. The next generation of Volkswagen's best-selling car debuted at a press conference today in Berlin, Germany. According to Volkswagen, the new Golf offers "more features, even better safety, and more performance." You know, the usual.

One item particularly of note is the fact that this Golf is 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, through a holistic diet (and new MQB architecture) that shaves weight in places as minute as the wiring and air conditioning. The use of high-strength steel has gone up by 28 percent, as well, compared with just six percent before.

The Golf you see here is the European-spec model, so in addition to perhaps different-colored indicators and the lack of a Euro-spec license plate, its unclear whether or not U.S. customers will see the new 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four found underhood. Little has been said regarding U.S.-spec powertrains, though earlier reports have stated that the aging 2.5-liter inline-five will be swapped out in favor of a 1.8-liter turbocharged four.

Still, we don't yet have any official word yet on pricing, availability, or the confirmation of the above drivetrain speculation. We will bring you that information as soon it becomes available. For now, scroll down to read Volkswagen's initial press release.

I studied the interior pics quite closely. The exterior is a home run, and the interior is very very nice.

Best model since the Mk4, I wholeheartedly agree.

I still have absolutely no desire to give up my 01 Jetta for one though....

Honestly, the TDIs haven't made much progress in the past decades....
Right, not much except:
- going from 90hp to 170hp for the same displacement
- going from black soot to clear air in the exhaust
- going from rattly to so quiet most ppl can't tell if the engine is on at all
- going from a top torque speed range spanning 200rpm to one spanning 2000rpm

Fact is, fuel economy has not been high on anyones list of priorities "in the past decades", considering the 90s and early 2000s saw the cheapest oil ever, in inflation-adjusted terms.
And still, in Europe at least, you have a 1.6l TDI to compare your old 1.9l against, and it comes out miles ahead in all respects including FE.

Although, the 2.5 turbo is apparently the VR6 replacement.

Which I don't mind - more efficient than a VR6, and while losing the awesome sound of the VR6 is a loss, getting more turbo 5-cylinder sound is a win. :)

I am surprised the VR6 lasted as long as it did, being too heavy (iron block) and too thirsty. I'm not a fan of 5 pot engines either, even turbocharged ones. I had one in a Volvo a while back....noisy and thirsty.
