well, if you compare the prices between the GTI and the GTD on the UK's website, they GTD actually comes out cheaper. However, I'm not sure if emissions tax has something to do with it. Knowing VWoA thought, if they're going to be pricks about it, they'll increase the price.

sorry to sound like a simpleton, but did GoFaster just say that every model coming in late 2013 get adblue design? i think this is great, less work for the emissions control systems? better mileage. anyone able to calculate, based on drag co-ef, weight, trans ratios what the likely mileage would be on a golf and sportwagen. i guess if you can do these calculations you could include the jetta, though i have no desire to know:rolleyes:

thanks in advance,

Looking at the difference in mileage between the golf and passat, I am guessing that the new engine in the golf should start pushing upper 50 s without to much effort. Probably see many publishing numbers in the low to mid 60s.

wow just wow---i know the speculation here was that the current set-up (ex-passat) was more idiot proof and vw did not have to complicate things for the owners but that is just spectacular mileage. please bring this set-up with the polo, i saw a few of those down in Colombia last year and to tell you the truth they are not that much smaller than the current golf. maybe a little shorter but visually that was about all i could see.

I don't know if GoFaster said anything to that effect, but don't believe what any of us says here anyway. This is all speculation. The quoted article said:
The EA288 diesel will be the TDI powerplant in the next-generation Golf, Jetta, and Passat.
And it said that it is a urea-based system. But I wouldn't even put too much in Car and Driver, either. Heck, even VW's own press releases aren't to be trusted!

The only thing to do is wait and see. Otherwise, it's all 'vaporware.'

With regards to mileage calculations.... That, too, is a big wad of speculation. If it were as simple of a calculation as you would like it to be, then the EPA would be able to get their numbers right. But they don't.

Again, only in the real world will we find out. We heard rumors of 60mpg for the CR TDI's back in 2009. We were disappointed with the reality of 40-ish, even though that ended up at the high end of the EPA's numbers.

okay---i should have qualified my questions with the term unobtainium because i do see what you are saying. it seems they (vw) does have a new platform and that apparently it has a place designed in for an adblue tank. that said, i totally understand your point and have read this sentiment on here for years now only to be confirmed with more no-shows than contenders. point taken and reinforced.

I agree that the only numbers that matter are what is achievable once the rubber hits the road. I based my guess on the difference in reported mileage of the passat with adblue versus the jetta/golf/jsw platform.

Don't quote me on this.

The only thing this is based on, is the photo that VW published a few months ago of the MQB "platform", and in that photo, was the plainly visible AdBlue tank behind the right rear wheel. It is quite apparent that the AdBlue system is designed into the vehicle platform. BUT ... Just because there is provision for it, doesn't automatically imply that it will be installed in every diesel-engine configuration - only that the possibility exists.

Another thing is that the main reason Golf/Jetta don't use AdBlue is that at the time these vehicles were being engineered, the US EPA was waffling about with what they were going to require for a vehicle that used an additive (other than fuel) for reducing emissions - what to do if the tank ran out, what sort of warning for the driver, etc. - and at the time, it wasn't certain if those questions were going to be resolved by the time VW wanted to have the cars in the showrooms. Now that all those questions are answered and AdBlue is readily available, that factor doesn't matter any more.

There is a cost factor involved. The AdBlue system is additional hardware in the vehicle.

GoFaster---sorry, i did not mean to make it sound like you were giving definitive information. i was asking a question and in my haste may have made it sound like this is inside information coming from you. i was just wanted to know if i was interpreting what i had read from you was correct. again sorry- if my verbiage was interpreted incorrectly. anyway, thanks for all of the information you bring to the forum.

Our Good ol buds at TOP GEAR have a review up for the GTD. I'll be posting it on golfgtd.ca as well. I do hate how some reviews are constantly comparing the GTD to the GTi. They're not supposed to be identical, so why the constant comparisons to the GTI? If it's supposed to be a GTI, why have two "GTIs" on the market? It's supposed to be a sportier TDI, that's it. If these reviews want to get it right, they should compared the TDI to the GTD, in my opinion. Anyways Happy Reading!

This thread is all over the place. So here is my non-MVII Golf related comment.

It seems like Hyundai, Ford (and others) are selling tiny little gassers that get 40 MPG like the Fiesta like hot cakes. I see them everywhere. It sure seems like a little Polo TDI could get 60 mpg (highway anyway for marketing purposes) and really separate itself from the pack. It would appeal to both the Prius fuel sipping crowd and the young people buying small entry level cars. And by breaking the 60 mpg barrier (or even 50, again) they could really separate themselves from the competition. Seems like a better place to push the TDI envelope then putting them into mid-size SUV's a la the Tiguan (even though I know there are many members who want one of those as well).

A Polo TDI might break 50 MPG with some margin on the EPA highway rating but not 60.

Last fall, AC on the whole way, PSL, all highway miles. Golf with 6MT.
What was the mileage for the full tank? We've seen lots of posts on partial tanks but the real story is multiple tanks over lots of mixed driving. Unless all you ever drive is highway, the partial numbers and just not as meaningful.

Careful. Not all of us are eco-freaks here. The earth is O.K., and so are we. The earth will be O.K., and so will we.

What's worth more? Human lives, or the environment?

Volvos are usually the safest cars. And usually the heaviest. The Swedes are pretty eco-conscious, but are even more safety-conscious.
LMAO - an "ostrich" kind of person?

Point to ponder - which is worth more? If the latter isn't okay then does the former matter at all?

The "what's worth more" question is interesting. I wouldn't consider myself to be any kind of freak. But the environment is something I like to be in, observe, enjoy. Animals are important to me, and certainly plants and trees are too. In fact, I am sure that human life will not exist without them or "it" (or would want to).

Protecting the environment has not been a priority for mankind, ever. Not the land, not the ocean. We might survive our own bad behavior towards our "home", but that eventual "existence" may not be one any of us will like! There is no end in sight to population growth. To answer the question though, human beings are certainly not worth more than the environment. We wouldn't exist if it weren't for (what passes for, in some places) an environment. Think about it...the environment does not threaten humans, but humans do more than just threaten the environment... we actively destroy it every day, mostly by burning it in various ways, but also contaminating it with chemicals and attacking all of it's inhabitants (including other humans). It's actually an amazing sight. Sometimes shocking.

"OK" ? define "OK"

Nearly seven out of 10 of the biologists polled said they believed a "mass extinction" is underway, and an equal number predicted that up to one-fifth of all living species could disappear within 30 years. Nearly all attributed the losses to human activity, especially the destruction of plant and animal habitats.

I know.. Biologists are bleeding heart idiots. Let's pretend this is not happening at all. Or just a slow extinction. Cool. Way better. At least, not in my lifetime. Why should I care? Go figure.

More ridiculous claims here:

These wild ideas don't deserve any attention, even if they are only a little accurate?! Just a little? All happening within hundreds of years, not thousands, or tens of thousands (hardly geological time)? If it is happening that fast, it is unusual.

Got children?

While I am sure that people of good will can agree or disagree on the above posting, perhaps it is best to stay on topic so that the thread does not get locked or drift away.

Sorry Arnie. These things are not black and white. Terms like ecofreak categorize people just as badly as terms like "conservative" or "liberal", which are just as inaccurate and badly abused today. I just think that fact should be separated from opinion. The hard numbers on species extinction are real, and human beings are one of the species. To be concerned about it should NOT result in being called "ecofreak". Anything that threatens the "environment" gets my attention, and it should get everyone's attention.

Timeline on possible release of "new" VW models are less dependable than the extinction numbers. :) I am more concerned about the latter, because my survival, and my children's survival, depends on it. The thread won't get locked or drift away, because there are other people that are worried about the earth, right here on this blog. It is related to the topic (I was not the one that brought it up).

You're making my point for me. :)

You're concerned for the environment not for the environment's sake, but for humanity's sake. You and your children.

The earth will be fine. I just read the other day that there used to be palm trees on Antarctica. And in 'recent' geological time, not as part of a Pangaea continent or something. What we have done to the earth is small, small beans compared to the changes the earth has gone through.

I stand opposed to the earth-worship of the far left, though.

The earth is here because it is a place made for we humans. And the source of our spirits is more than competent to handle the environment he put us in. We give him too little credit.

p.s. I don't drive a TDI out of a sense of tree-hugger-ness. I drive a TDI because I save $1000 in fuel over the 30k miles I drive every year.

Has anyone seen the 2013 TDI beetle yet? I'll be at the dealer later today and will take a look around to see what he has sitting there in diesel flavor.

"new" models

The only recent (2012) Beetle TDI is saw recently was in Spain. White, 1.6 Liter TDI. I like the way VW revived the exterior finish color matched metal dash.

I haven't seen a single 2013 Beetle TDI here yet, and have been at three local dealerships this week (KC area). And 6MT Passat TDIs are scarce around here. I am waiting for a new one... Yup. You heard it here first. They offered me an excellent trade-in allowance for the JSW. I should be in the 6MT Passat SE TDI just about Labor Day. YeeHaw!

I asked VW South Charlotte yesterday about the TDI beetle. The saleman said they had several 2013 gassers on the lot but have not seen a TDI yet. He also added that most of theier sales staff has been switching over to the new Passat and about half are now driving diesels. He added that he would consider it if his Mazda weren't less than six months old.

I would buy one without any hesitation! (1000%) specially if they have the 4Motion option as well...
