GTI on the VW website runs from about $24K to $31K. The Golf adds between $3K and $5K for similar trim packages going from gasser to diesel. Putting those two things together, I would anticipate top selling price around $35K in the States. Add another 10 - 15% for Canada.
I'm an enthusiast of diesel performance for sure, but what's the market for the GTD in North America?

Anybody European side help with this question? Who buys GTD's in Europe? It is tough for me to analyze that question because I am in my late 30's and still love modding my TDI, yet I don't see any sizable market for it.

The market for diesels is mature in Europe, North Americans are just beginning to see the value in diesel motors. They are being advertised as "clean" and "great MPG" to appeal to the environmentalist and to the economical (TDI's on the VW site are along side the Hybrids). I think BMW once advertised the 3 series as kind of a sporty car with lots of passing power, but that's the only one I can recall.

So diesels in NA are the "economical" option. And the 140HP motor in the TDI's today deliver plenty of power for the average driver getting 40 MPG (or what ever they get now)

While I like the idea of it, I don't see it happening.

Awesome! Who still offers a sabbatical? Intel???

For me, i'd rather get a used X5 diesel. Sure different car different market, but man are they BUTTER. You can find a 2010 for under $40k. For $5k more, I say BOOOM-Dizzle on the BMW.

Anybody European side help with this question?
In Europe, regular people interested in fuel economy buy their Golfs with a 1.6 TDI. The 2.0 TDI 140hp is a "trade off fuel economy for more power" option only 5.9% of buyers choose. The GTD percentage is 3.7%, as the amplified performance version.
Regular people who don't drive a lot buy a gasser, traditionally the least powerful (~80hp) one is the best selling, because it's the cheapest to buy.

Here's the percentages for 2010. I'll try to dig up newer ones.
1.4 80hp: 18,5%
1.2 TSI 85hp: 2,7% (SOP KW32/2010)
1.6 102hp: 3,0%
1.6 102hp BiFuel: 0,3% (LPG/gasoline dual fuel)
1.2 TSI 105hp: 10,5%
1.2 TSI 105hp BMT: 3,1%
1.4 TSI 122hp: 17,1%
1.4 TSI 160hp: 4,0% (twincharged 1.4)
2.0 TSI 210hp: 5,9% (GTI)
2.0 TSI 235hp: 1,4% (GTI Edition 35)
1.6 TDI 105hp: 17,5%
1.6 TDI 105hp BMT: 6,4%
2.0 TDI 140hp: 5,9%
2.0 TDI 170hp: 3,7% (GTD)

(The Mk7 lineup is simpler at the moment: No naturally aspirated 1.4 and 1.6 anymore, those have been replaced by 1.2TSI variants. No more twincharged 1.4 160hp.)

Thanks!

3.7% of the European market drive the GTD, but with diesels having a 33.4% market share. I was reading a funny post on this forum in the 101 section where somebody was asking for advice on buying a TDI, to which one person responded with something to the effect of:

"What the decision really comes down to is, are you ready to become a member of 0.1% of all US car buyers?"

I am sure that number is skewed, but you get the point. There just 'aint enough chips in the cookie to take a bite....

Real bummer...Looks like we'll have to go to Europe to test drive...or just continuing what we are doing and try to import what we can and make the standard Golf close enough to the real deal for government work.

Diesels have lots of market share to gain in NA before I see adding a real performance model, not like the limp in job VW did with the Cup Cars. It was cool to see the slightest move to adding performance to diesels, but fell way short of being able to move money out of my wallet (then again, I am pretty stingy).

Cheers...

I think that I will be trading my car in...
If it is really awesome and once somebody has a tune available.

Those are my only stipulations.

I was going to be doing a lot of work on my TDI as tuning and all this spring, but now I just might hold the extra dosh for a new GTD.

Though, I might hold out an extra year to pick one up only because I'd hate to be hit with early build production issues like the HPFP.

Being new to the TDI experience and reading up on this forum for the past month or so, it seems like very few people, if anyone, legitimately expected this to happen so soon.

If that is the case, is it possible that there will be more TDIs brought stateside (Fox, Polo, CC) and this is the beginning? Or is this just an isolated one-off?

I dunno, I think it's a HUGE styling improvement, and I own a Mk5 Sportwagen myself....

The current Sportwagen looks nice from the front, O.K. from the side, and homely from the rear. The front has some crispness to it. The sides are 'meh'....the mirrors are blobs, and the 'styling line' that runs above the door handles is too soft, washed out. The rear is just homely.

This new Mk7 has got some great, crisp lines all around. And without being too 'busy', like BMW's direction has been of late. This still looks incredibly classy. More like an Audi than a VW!

And I think these lines look better on the long Mk7 wagon than they do the Mk7 Golf.

I'll be trading up in a year. :)

IF it was Sportwagen sized sure I'd be all over it....but I need the space. Oh well, be happy with what you got and what not. Hopefully this will make GTD engine parts more cheaply available, like injectors...

i wouldn't jump on it right away. might be hard to get a good deal on the new car because of the high demand. also need to give it a year or so to work out the kinks on the US version.
