"Producing the Golf in Puebla, Mexico signals a continued commitment to the North American market and allows Volkswagen to make further strides towards the goal of building more than 75 percent of the cars Volkswagen of America sells in the NAFTA region," said Jonathan Browning, President, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "For more than 40 years, Puebla has been manufacturing quality ...

Well I bet Chatanooga feels special. Seriously building in the US works for Toyota and gives you something to say when all of the "buy American" relatives start complaining.

My 03 Chevy Avalanche was built in mexico but still had a built in America sticker on it. Last I checked Mexico was still considered part of North America.

Another way to look at that is that Chattanooga will be building at least 25% of the cars for North America. If/when they build the second plant that number will only go up.

I'm interpreting that differently - that the goal is for 75% of cars that VW sells in the US, to be made in either Puebla or Chattanooga.

That reminds me of when Walmart was putting US flags stating made in USA on their merchandise....turns out they meant a town named Usa in Okinawa. As you can see I bought a Mexican made JSW and I'm quite happy with it. I do work with a lot of people who won't buy a vehicle unless it says Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. Some of them will make an exception if it is made in the United States of America. There is also a Volkswagen of Mexico seperate and distinct from Volkswagen of America.

VWOA, VW of Canada, and VW de Mexico are the sales arms of VWAG. Manufacturing is all part of VWAG.

I remember years back when I lived in Waterloo, Iowa (home of the John Deere Boy), the local UAW building had signs in the parking lot saying only American built cars allowed. Roll by there in the summer and you saw Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha motorcylces. No hogs because "only gangs" rode hogs at that time. I guess they could have allowed the US built Bunnies to park there.

If you're interested in buying American I think it matters more where the profit goes than where the plant is. And although we do have one TDI sourced in Mexico and it's one of our best, I still tend to favor cars built in the manufacturer's home country. I guess my MKVI Golf is the last of that type for North America.

Well, they're claiming only 75% NAFTA volume, and I'm guessing the Touareg won't be the other 25%, so there'll be another model, and I'd guess that will be from Germany.

Tiguan and CC. Foretunatley it looks like the Routan has died. Not that is has many sales but where is the EOS built?

I have one Mexican built and two German built.

Same here. German B5.5 Passat and '11 Golf hatch; '13 Mexican Golf Wagon.

Can't find much difference between wagon and hatch. If anything the Mexican seems tighter than the German.

I'm definitely in the "I'll believe it when I see it" camp, since VW loves to play these little games with us so much. But if it does come here, pretty sure I found my next car.

In the past I've heard that the next refresh of the Tiguan should have a diesel available. The problem is finding a place for the urea tank, which they can't currently fit anywhere. With a Tig remodel they'll design in a place for it. 2015 was the date I heard for the next body refresh, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Randomly had a conversation a few days ago about how kick ass it would be to have a gti interior, suspension, body, but with a tdi engine...and I stumbled across this amazingness!

Will buy!

What I wonder is why VW had ZERO Golfs at the Detroit show.
I read in the local (French) paper that the 2.5 is dying, finally, to be replaced by a 1.8T. The article said TWO-HUNDRED-AND-FIFTY horsepower!!! I can't imagine this is the base version. Anyway said article said that VW Canada hadn't yet pinned down the engine choices and model range for the '14 Golf.

If the base Golf has 250 horses, what the heck is going into the GTI??? My guess is that 250 will be found in the GTI, but that the base gassers will come in at around 170-200 or so.

Anyway in short I think they didn't have any because they still don't know what the Golf lineup will look like for N. America. The article did say they (and the 1.8T) would be built in Mexico this time.

Send it over, it would sell. Does the 4 motion have any more ground clearance than the TDI? That would be my biggest concern. Also, has VWOA or VW of Canada ever sold a 4 motion TDI combo?
