Hello. Just removed my transmission for a new clutch. There is evidence of grinding below the main shaft on the tranny housing (protruding circle with 4 nuts near each corner). Has any member had or seen this before on a A4 tranny? Not sure if this is cause for concern or not! Please chime in if anybody has seen this or has any idea. Thanks everybody.

Sorry, I'd post a photo, but I'm having trouble doing so.

Most likely the flywheel coming apart jetting the pressure plate contact the trans. How does the flywheel look?

Looks OK. Would something like this be caused by running the clutch too thin?

I have seen a mark that sounds like what you describe:

This car had a really bad DMF but no slipping. It was very hard to disengage the clutch (jam pedal into floor to shift). A stock replacement DMF kit was installed with no issues.
If you 'host' your pictures in photobucket/flicker, etc., you can post them here.

Exactly!!

Yup, that is caused by a bad DMF. Let it go long enough and it will rub a hole in the trans.
Thanks GForce. This is EXACTLY what I was describing in my post. My clutch seemed to function normally but clutch began to slip gradually more and more over the span of approx. 5K miles until finally could barely pull the car on a slight graded road. Could somebody elaborate how this happens and what causes the grinding. How do you know if DMF is failing? I intend to install a new LUK DMF Repset...should I think twice about doing so?

Thank you for responding to my post and wish all a Great 2015!! :)

Is it a sin to bump a year old post? I have the exact same rubbed area inside of the bellhousing, and I'd like to make sure that its the DMF before I replace it (money is tight). I took the transmission off to replace the rear main seal, but the clutch friction disc was quite thin. The LuK DMF is manufactured Oct. '98, so probably original to the car.

And is the LuK 17-050 basically the same as the LuK RepSet DMF 600 0006 00? The best I can find the latter for here is 280€ from someone selling on classifieds, so y'all in the US are lucky if you can get such a thing for just $188.

Swap it for a Single Mass Flywheel while its all apart and be done with it. along with the clutch, throw out bearing, release fork....then you won't have to worry....
