Greetings all!

For those of you who might be in the market for standard size tires for your Passat (195/60-14), in today's Sears flyer they have Michelin XGT H4s for 73.99. Check your newspaper...

wow, that is a great price. I have run these tires on a few cars and liked them very much. This is not a good snow tire even though it is marker as "all season". Excellent in all other conditions.

I believe these tires are load rated at 85 and VW specs out an 86 for the 195/60-14 tire on the B4.

jck66:

What would the difference between 85 and 86 imply for using them on my Passat?

dieseldorf:

I hope by "not good" you don't mean terrible; I just put two on the front...

I don't purport to be a tire expert. I just replaced worn-out Pirellis on my Passat that were 85 load rated and I didn't know the difference.

That being said, while tire shopping recently, I read this article and took the time to look up the tire spec (inside the fuel filler door) for the Passat.

I found a site that allows you to do an advanced search for tires by spec. You may need to hit "advanced search" and "spec" to get there, but then you can search by a combination of size and load rating. IIRC, the exact spec is 195/60-14 86H.

Hope this helps.

PS I ended up with Michelin Energy MXV4+ from Costco.

not to worry,, the 85 rating is only 35 lbs less than the 86 rating.. so you really didnt change much..

this is not unusual when you go from a snow tire to an road tire etc.... to see a slightly different tire carcuss and number of belts and construction technigues.. so although you loss 35 lbs per tire max weight, you probably gain in fuel economy or some other area.. and its unusual to run a car at max weight, unless your hauling washing machines or something.

Well, I am running those tires on my Passat, and love them. Tread wear seems to be going OK (i.e. not wearing out fast) too. Great grip in most weather conditions, and snow seems fair too. But I am not one to bother with dedicated snow tires, it usually isn't that snowy around where I live.--Steve
