1. No power seat/memory seat
2. No homelink.
3. No AC cubby and glove box.
4. No adjustable arm rest.
5. No MFD saying fuel economy, distance to empty, etc....
6. No engine temp gauge.
7. No grocery bag hook
I've never had a car with any of that, just more stuff to go wrong IMO.

ChippedNotBroken: Well, your 99.5 Jetta has #6...

The 2011 Jetta has no coolant temperature gauge. At all. All it has is an idiot light, like the New Beetle. (If it's like the New Beetle, you get a blue light when the engine isn't warmed up, a red flashing light when you're low on coolant, and a solid red light when it's overheating.)

Hard to call that mk4 "gauge" a gauge. More like an idiot light on a stick.

IIRC, it actually is a gauge, there's just a scaling factor that keeps it at 190 F for way too long.

It's not like, say, the oil pressure gauges on many Ford products... three-position oil pressure switch, and the needle only ends up in three positions - zero, normal, or max.

Also, the clusters in cars with temp gauges also have lights for coolant, since late in the Mk1's run (at least on diesels) - the Mk2 one will actually max out the temp gauge when it detects low coolant, too.

Sounds like the difference between a Moron light on a switch and an Idiot light on a switch.

Did VW get rid of the ESP Off switch by the "ash" tray?

I heard that it will soon be mandatory that all cars come with traction control. With that becoming the new rule you won't be allowed to turn it off. The new ESC will allow tire spin under 10mph so you won't get stuck in snow apparently but the days of being able to drive a car without the nanny state protecting you from yourself will soon be gone. That's what my dealer told me at any rate. Well not the part about the nanny state... that was all me. LOL

I understand the pending/soon federal mandate is for stability-control, not traction-control.

yeah but i guess all we need is one idiot to get into an accident with ESP button off and then suing VW or any other automaker for that.

Humans are being dumb and dumber everyday! I remember when i had my Ford Focus i could have bought SVT HID headlights from my dealership in Canada, I knew i had to do some wiring modifications to fit them properly. This was all good until some idiot make a stink about Ford selling these and they were not plug and play, so guess what! Ford just took them off the market.

Soon we are going to have cars limiting our speeds as per posted signs on the road. So if the sign says 100kms/hr, they you can not go any faster then that :D

Much like you I have had my Jetta TDI Highline for a little over 2 weeks and am loving the new power plant!! Have had several TDI's and the styling of this one is one of the best, IMO.

However, there are a few things that are missing/different that are OK with me but bother me a surprising amount. #7 for instance. Normally I would think "who cares" but when I dropped in my lawnmowers gas can it took me a moment to realise I was going to have to hook my restraining chord to the underside of the trunk. Not a huge deal, but a niggle all the same. I think getting one will be one of my first mods!

Also, the hard plastic dash, as someone mentioned, is a bit cheap. But I now can attach or stick items (cell holder,...) to it with no worries. So a wash there.

The traction control off button is of a concern of mine as well, especially when I've come close to getting my previous '06.5 hung on snow banks due to the @#$%@ traction control. But i've pushed this car on some gravel roads and have found that it ingages much later. when I asked the shop the mech said they've changed the system to be much more speed sensitive, which is very cool, and "smarter", whatever that means.

As far as #1 through #4, I never used them so don't miss them, though the arm rest sometimes on long hauls, but most of the time it got in the way. Another slight bonus is a much better lumbar support in the drivers seat, much more adjustable. Also, there seems to be more space in the back seat for the kids, so some sweetness there as well.

Not sure what the diff is between our models/trim but I have all those components you mention in #5. You can scroll through the options from a rocker switch on the end of the wiper control arm (of all places!).

I agree with #6. I miss knowing when the car has reached optimum, but am getting used to it. But, again an offsetting bonus, there must be a seperate heater because the heat comes on shortly after I've started the car and blows significantly hotter than both my '06.5 and '03. Makes my wife and kids happy I can assure you.

The digital gas gauge looks nice but isn't very usefull, not like an analogue gauge would be. And talking of gas, I'm having mixed feelings about my fuel economy. At almost 3k km's, I've seen significantly better on the highway, reaching as low as 6.4L/100km in mixed (but mostly highway) driving, but as high as 8.1 in city!! I hope it gets better as I break in the engine and change my driving habits to maximise the mpg's (though it is extremely tempting to open this puppy up!!).

So despite the smaller trunk opening and the "crusher" hinges for the trunk, my overall impression is "very glad I bought it!!".

PS.: does anyone know if we can muffle-rectomy this sucker?

I took mine off of my mk5 before trading the car in for the mk6 Jetta. Here it is installed in the new Jetta

On GM cars with stability control, the button would shut off the traction control only, but leave the rest of the system active.

Hey! thanks for the pic! Did you drill the holes or were there some already in the right place?

I should've done the same when I traded in mine. Oh well, there's got to be some after market ones (or dealer at a premium) around somewhere.

Exactly why I purchased a 2010 model and not a 2011....Just bought my car 2 days ago. Picked up a cup car and I love it!
Did you get that one from McDonald's? I was surprised that they still had a new '10 in the showroom, especially with no '11 TDIs yet, and I didn't see any '10 TDIs.
