Passat Wagon, 2005, Shadow Blue - DECEASED
Well...my 2005 Passat TDI Variant was recently totalled. I absolutely loved that car but the only thing I didn't like was its handling in the snow. Becaue VW does not offer the new Passat in a Wagon (A3 is smaller and more expensive) and the fact that there are no reasonably priced diesel cars/trucks with AWD/4WD, I am getting a Subaru Outback.

Hopefully when this car dies, there will be more diesel options. For the few remaining owners of an 05 TDI Variant...take care of them because there aren't many left.

Mine's phenomenal in snow, but I run four snow tires (-2 sized).
A second set of wheels and tires is always cheaper than the AWD option.

Ditto on the snows. My Passat with snows has better traction than my wife's "real time" 4wd Honda CRV.

I would much rather drive my B5.5 wagon with snows in foul weather than the wife's Forester with all seasons. The Forester with snows would be nearly unstoppable however.

With the true cost of ownership with these B5.5 Passats, consider the totaling of your car a cost savings' blessing.

Two inches smaller on the rim diameter than stock rims.

i.e. probably has the OEM 17" rims and is running 15" snows.

I have the 16" OEM rims and am running 15" snows, so I am "-1" by comparison.

Can you explain "(-2 sized)", please?

And along with the rim diameter, the tire tread width and sidewall height changes in order to keep the same nominal tire diameter for various rim sizes (see any tire size calculator). In the "-2" example above, 225/45-17 vs 195/65-15, the 15" tires have about a 1 1/8" narrower tread width (30mm) and 1" taller sidewall.
