In my car, only the doors are done so far as I had to replace a broken regulator.
  1. I put CLD tiles between the crash bars on the inside of the outer skin and put them on the inside of the inner skin.
  2. I used CCF over the CLD tiles on the outer skin covering the crash bars and leaving room for water to drain. I actually put 2 layers in spots. While this won’t absorb sound. I figured the soft surface will slow the reflection of sound waves in the cavity from both the speaker and road noise.
  3. I covered the inside of the of the inner panel with CCF, as well as the rear of the door panel. I also decoupled the door panel from the metal. Decoupled the speaker pod by drilling out the rivets and made sure to secure any rattling clips.

I initially only did the driver door, and my left ear felt deaf as I could hear anything and the road noise is now coming through the floor instead of the doors!!

music (I have the monsoon system, but use a Pioneer DEH-80PRS as I’m old and still like CD’s) instantly became livelier with much more mid bass, and tighter drums (Tom’s and kicks) its as if I added a small sub. There is still a lot of tuning to do.

Man, I’m typing this from my phone and am about over it :ROFLMAO:

remember, sound travels up. So I would place emphasis on the doors, firewall/floor, and wheel Wells over the ceiling.

once you do the doors, you will sit and kick yourself for not doing the floors at the same time. But just turn the music up!!

Alright, last thing, you can go down the rabbit hole of perfectionist with this. Stick to the 80/20 rule here and remember it gets covered up so don’t beat yourself up with cuts and joints.

you can also add things like sheets of MLV (mass loaded vinyl). Think of it like trying to throw a football through a sheet, that’s what MLV does to sound waves. But it gets cumbersome and thick quickly. So I wouldn’twaste my time.

Once finished, your car will be as quieter or quieter than 90% of new cars on the road. Oh and I am NO expert!

...also on the list: pick up a bunch of Waxoyl Hardwax Plus and Waxoyl Power Shield to coat the ever-living **** out of every crevice of both the Golf and Touareg before the first snowflake falls. That's gonna be fun. It's crazy how clean this car is, there isn't a speck of rust in the rockers and I'm going to be fighting to keep it that way. After I coat the insides of the rockers, I might try to block off the front end to reduce possible incursion...
Read this post and the next day was at flaps that happened to have waxoyl stuff, picked up a can to see how it works on the seats but thinking of steam cleaning first

That's awesome, I didn't realize they made a fabric protector too!

I ordered a 452 relay from DALEY1DEALS quite a while back and just finally received a tracking number the other day, followed shortly thereafter the part itself arrived and looks good. Won't know if it really works until I get the Kufatec harness, but I don't see why it wouldn't. All told, took about a month and a half or two to get the part.

I reached out to them a couple times via various methods (email, phone) and never heard a peep, so I figured I'd thrown my money into the wind... but it was very well priced compared to other options available. Had a discount code and the $4 part ended up being $5.43 shipped.

I might try purchasing some other inexpensive parts in the future since they seem to have good stock and price things pretty cheaply. As long as I'm willing to wait 2mos, it seems like a decent deal.

@JonA
+ TT control arm bushings
+ rear beam bushings
+ good quality dogbone mount
All of these will drastically improve how the car drives if they are original.
Great thread !
Fun and informative - @GlowBugTDI - do you or anyone reading this have a solid recommendation on a quality dogbone mount ?

I read through an ancient thread about 034 and BFI - and it sort of discouraged me from going aftermarket.
lots of vibrations and in the case of 034 - not a very durable product - so at the moment I would be tempted to lean in the direction of simply going OEM- not too sure if there’s any upgrade that folks here recommend.
sorry if I derailed the most current direction of the thread.

Not derailing at all, I'm interested in current recommendations too. I think it was my first Mk4 (Jetta), I had BFI motor mounts, not sure if I got the dogbone too... I think I went with stage 2 not really caring about NVH, but this time around I'm more invested in having a balanced quiet, comfortable, but fun ride.

Will be more inspiring when it's done, ha! My budget has taken a lot of hits lately, trying to get it back up on its feet before I sock it again with the materials I need to get that all done.

From most it seems that oem is the way to go for dogbone mounts. Everything else seemingly picks up to much Vibration. I've read that a fluidampr harmonic balancer will help with stiff mounts, but no experience here.
I used to take them apart, heat up a glue stick into a circle, and put it in there to add some more tension. Worked decent. Or 5gallon pail/55gal drum shims.

You happy with the upper IC set up?
Any changes with regards to the silicone 45 degree 2” - 2.5” coupling ?

So far so good, much more clearance of the pulley etc... which is confidence inspiring. If I were doing it again, I'd get a longer 45deg 2" - 2.5", just so there's more wiggle room and more contact surface, but all is still solid. I liked the hump idea, but couldn't find one for a reasonable price that was the dimensions I'd like. I bought a 1.8t lower pancake pipe and am looking forward to popping that in too.

Is there no way to pack them full of windshield urethane like guys do with normal motor mounts? Been a while since I looked at mine so I can’t recall if there are voids that could be filled.

I'm sure you could calk some in there, let it set, then add the original bushing in to increase tension. Never done it though. Hard to say how much it would increase stiffness. Doing a full urethane bushing in there would be somewhat difficult. I made a urethane reinforced trans mount after I broke my last one, and the vibration is real. I had to honeycomb the material some to help decrease the stiffness.

Just did a complete rebuild and used the 034 brand rubber mounts that are 25% stiffer than stock. The engine had at least an inch and a half of easy slop on the stock mounts before rebuild and I am throwing quite a bit over OEM torque at them, so was hoping for more durable...but not the god awful poly mount vibe.

I have several hundred miles into break-in. I'm just going to say...I hope they break in more and continue to soften a bit. It's not terrible, but I have a thing against little rattles, and these certainly cause some vibes.

I'll know more after a couple K miles and I start hammering on it to break them in, but I suspect I would choose stock next time (especially given the price tag of 034) even in a fairly modified ALH.

Ah yes I have head decent things about those mounts. I forgot about those. They will break in some, but won't become a ton better. My homemade one loosened up a little, but only enough to notice the slightest difference.
To those who live in winter climates note that in the winter they will become stiffer causing more vibration. That is what I have found at least.

Delightful to hear as it looking like snow outside this morning. I didn't even think about temp affecting the flex...well I'll just have have to break them in extra vigorous. Chuckle.

3k clutch dumps for the win! ;) Can always swiss cheese them a little with a tiny drill bit if needed later. As much as the vibration eventually gets annoying I like how the stiffer mounts feel.

I'm no double clutch granny shifter, but clutch dumps make me squirm having seen and held all the little oily bits...

Hmm..swiss cheese mod. I will keep that in mind! Tho I also choose performance over comfort 90% of the time, all the time...

@JonA I am inspired by your dedication to detail and careful build! My wagon interior is in decent shape but has a lot of miles...and still has sticky soft touch gunk, door panel wear etc that you are motivating me to make some moves on...

Always loved this platform... and always wanted to get one in tip top shape but not willing to pay the price in one go, so here I am (plus I do enjoy tooling around, as much as I bellyache about it from time to time). Worst fear now is that this thing's life will be cut short by another careless driver, but I'm trying to keep that out of mind.

@DanHenrich, maybe ask @norbert77? Saw this post of his in the "what you did" thread the other day.

Clocked fuel economy at 46.9 this time around. Guessing no boost leak helps.

Picked up my 11mm pump and .260s from burpod yesterday morning, but sadly, time (and more importantly, budget) won't allow me to install these for a while longer yet.

Picked up all black trim to swap in to my car yesterday, along with a bullet antenna, for $200. Will be picking up the black carpet for another $50 before long. Trying to decide whether I want to install and wire the heated seats, or garage the Golf for the winter and fix up the Jetta to keep the Golf saltless.

Welllllll... one of the roof drains is clogged again, already. Don't love that. Fortunately, the headliner is still out so not a big problem. I might get some new tubing if I can find it because there are water stains from this one leaking before. It was clogged when I took it down, and the fact it's already clogged again has me thinking maybe there's something wrong with it.

All that aside, I'm thinking I might throw a tarp over top and park it for the winter to spare it the salt one more year. I've admitted to myself I'm not going to finish all the things I wanted to get done before the first snow. I think I'm going to cave, do the DPF on the Mk6, and return to the Golf when it's warm and all the salt's been washed away.

Anyone got any car cover recommendations for a 4dr Golf, or does tarp + bungees reign supreme?
