(Golf) Low beam headlight connection...

I bought some fancy-schmancy replica headlights for my Jetta, so I want the low beam to stay on with the high beam.

I've worked through the wiring diagrams and I'm 99-44/100% sure that I want to connect pin 7 on my headlight switch (the one in the dash) to the wire marked [177] on wiring diagram page 52/9.

However... where the hell is that connection? Or rather, where would it be on a Golf? Is it in the engine compartment? Is it in the fuse box? Is it a splice in the wiring harness? Is it a wire I can unplug from somewhere else (one of the "Jetta only" wires) and re-purpose? Is it in the turn signal/high beam switch on the steering column?

I've included a picture for your viewing pleasure:

Aw crap... I thought it was going to supply a thumbnail link to the big image, not show the whole thing full size.

Sorry about that.

Or maybe a better question is, where is "Connection (56b), in passenger compartment wiring harness"? The diagram says the connector is there, but I can't find anything in my Bentley manuals to show me where I should look.

I am confused though, if you have a golf, both lights should stay on to begin with..

edit: never mind, I didn't fully read your first post. That link above will do what you want. And yes, it is in the steering compartment.

So... it looks like you disconnect the yellow/green wire from the flasher switch on the stalk (pin 8) and add a new wire back to the headlight switch on the dash (pin 7/56*).

Is that right?

That would work, but doesn't seem like the way VW would have done it.

In a Golf, where would the other end of the wire plugged into pin 7/56* on the dash switch go? up to the steering column to go back to the headlights seems a bit weird.

Disconnect/cut, whichever. The point is that you need to connect that wire to the headlight switch. If you disconnect it from its connector that is fine, you just connect it to another wire to the switch. If you cut it though, you need to connect the DASH side of the wire to the headlight switch. Does that make sense? In other words, if you cut the wire instead of pulling it, you need to leave the connector side and splice the dash side. And why would that be weird? The high beams are activated with the turn signal stalk so the wiring would have to pass through that area. Also, VW wiring is crazy sometimes, don't underestimate their ability to making wiring that is illogical.
