I want to run some wiring from my '01 Golf GLS engine compartment into the dash. (Specifically, one for the switch on a fuel filter heater, and one for an outside thermometer.) What is the best route through the firewall? The switch would be best somewhere near the hood release, and the thermometer display would be best up near the left dash vent.

On my 2004 Golf I had a rubber plug in the firewall I used. It was located near the master cylinder. From the front of the car looking at the master cylinder, it is just to the left and about even with top of the power brake booster and near the where the the water lines ( I think) go to the heater core. This plug was not used on my car and was about half covered by the material applied to the fire wall. I pop it out cut a slit in it and ran my outside temp wire to the front fender and it worked great.
