I was going to pull my spare and try to swap it with my full size tire from the 2000 golf I recently sold. It was a the moment of sale that we tried to make the swap, and I realized that I can not figure out how to get the spare out of my new car. The pic in the manual is not quite like the screw mech. in the rear. The threaded knob holding my spare in is so secure it feels like a single molded piece with the threaded shaft.

so what am I not seeing?

Just turn the large nut on the threaded shaft. Lefty loosey, righty tighty.

Just did it the other day when I got a flat.

Also, a 2000 Golf has a different bolt pattern. MK7's are 5x112 and a MK4 is 5x100, so you're full-size spare won't fit.

Thanks I thought it was that easy, but it would not budge. Ill give it another shot today.

Thanks for the tip on the bolt spacing too, the stuck nut saved me from future disaster

OP, mine was tightened super tight by either the dealer or the factory, and I also couldn't get it to budge. I wanted to checkout how to remove the tire so I was prepared if I ever did get a flat.

I took the pliers included the roadside assistance kit (but any pliers will do) and grabbed an edge of the large nut looking down at it from the top. One tug loosened it to where I could turn it by hand. Just something to try. It will budge with enough force.

I had the same problem. The large plastic nut holding the spare down was too tight fit me to take off by hand. I had to get a wrench to loosen it before I could get my spare out.
