When I drive on the highway in my MK4, my left arm rests on the door's arm rest, and my right arm exactly the same way on the arm rest. My body is symmetrical and this is very comfortable on long trips.

My thought about the 2011 Jetta's arm rest: what arm rest?

This is the kind of garbage that makes me think I'd be more likely to buy an 03, invest a good 15,000 into it to restore it to new instead of buying a 2011, if I had the money.

none anymore
just get a base model with no armrest, wait a year and the aftermarket crowd will have some kind of "MkV-like" armrest if you want to pay for it.

I drive with my hands on the 9 & 3 o'clock positions and have not missed any armrest.:)

Granted if VW designers had moved the cup holders right to the edge of the gear shift lever it would have added 2" more to the sorry excuse of an armrest?:(

Hey I said woman, not dumb tree hugging woman.

Real men drive with the left hand at the 12 o'clock position and the right hand on the manual shifter, cause manual is all that men drive. :D

Experienced drivers know not to rest their foot on the clutch or hand on the shifter. :D You only touch them when you need to.

I have better things to do than to constantly touch the gear knob to justify my manhood!:D
In fact my DSG tranny lets me answer business phone calls and write down the address of my customers and program my GPS so I can conduct my business without ever worrying about gears!:D

While most of the car is great I must say the armrest is horrible in the 2011 Jetta TDI. I wish they made it taller and more forward.

Let's get real here and lose the stereotypes. I'm a 50 year old woman who drives a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI, average 100K miles a year, have no problem pumping diesel (just grab a paper towel and who cares about the smell), usually have only one hand on the wheel, and yeah, the armrest isn't the greatest but it's not that big of a deal.

it's actually better than my old MK4 arm rests, because that thing was a PITA...
Whenever I try to have a good time with my gf in the car with the seats lowered all the way... (which you need to turn the stupid circle handle so much... those who knows the pain.. they know.. lol), the arm rest is always in the wrong places!!!! if i put it up, it sticks out like a morning 9enis... if i put it down, the center has a wall so i couldn't hold my gf's hands without having the most awkward position to do so..

This arm rest is okay as its function, and for storage.. Don't know why people are complaining... they've improved soo much on this arm rest IMO.. lol

That must be it, the new design is based on holding hands and getting laid.

Shouldn't your hands be at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock on the steering wheel? Why would you need an armrest if you are driving properly.

I have no problem with the center armrest. Seems fine to me. My Challenger had the adjustable sort, but I didn't really think "This car is OK, but damn is this armrest fantastic!"

Well, since you had a Challenger, no surprise you find the armrest fine... Anyone who has better taste and owned a MKV will find the MKVI armrest lacking.

As for your 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock theory, it's nothing more than a stupid rumor. In fact it's dangerous and not recommended for airbag equipped cars; in case of an accident it's a sure way to break your arms.

I had a chance to reflect on the armrests in the 2011 jetta. Mine is a DSG, and if I steer with my right arm and park my left arm on the door panel, I can realize some comfort. In order to use the right armrest, I must move the seat back and this helps expose the center armrest/console, making it quite comfortable.

I do not see a problem... I used to own B5.5 Passat and the armrest was adjustable and quite frankly if it wasnt for the fact that people would bring it up... I do not think that i would have noticed that the armrest was not adjustable in the 2011 JTDi.... It is very comfortable...maybe because i am 6'0"... I guess the shorter you are the worse it feels

Having your hands on the steering wheel at the 2 and 10 o'clock positions just might prevent that accident in the first place and save the life of someone you care about.....

That alone makes it the right thing to do.

I use other hand positions as the situation warrants and I am licensed to drive up to and including Class 8 tractor trailer units. (for only a little less than the last 40 years!!)

I just noticed yesterday that my armrest slides forward! I was thinking it was uncomfortable till I leaned on it to grab something in the back seat and it slid forward! Voila! Lift it up to the correct height and all is good now...
If the 2011 is different, couldn't a 2010's work or is it the same thing?

The Jetta's are completely different than the JSW's.
