Validation testing. A 150,000 mile durability test with a suitable number of cold-starts takes at least 6 months to do running 24/7 including the cold-soak (engine not running) periods in preparation for including cold starts in the test procedure. And that's if nothing goes wrong. If something does go wrong ... start over.

It's one thing to demonstrate compliance with the various requirements for a new car ... quite another to demonstrate that it will remain compliant 150,000 miles later.
That's an excellent basic explanation. Unfortunately those who should read it probably won't. It's easier to remain uninformed and blame VW.

I did return the offer documents today, opting for the fix on my 2015 GSW, figuring once it is approved and the performance dings are published, I can change over to a buyback if I prefer, as stated in the offer documents as you mentioned. I would probably decide prior to part 1 of the fix, but it does sound like it may be allowed to change between part 1 and the final part 2. The 2/3 payment would be deducted from the Buyback offer presumably.
.
Today I went ahead and sent in my notorized claim/release forms for the modification remedy also. There was really no compelling reason to sit on it.
.
Now, all we can do is just sit back and wait and see what VW comes up with in way of a fix for the EA288 Gen 3. Maybe we will see a torque and mpg gain. :p
I do like the extended warranty they are offering up for a fix.
.
Anyhow, 5/1/2018 is the latest date for mod approval. At this point I'm just motoring on.
