Fuel shut off valve issues

My fuel shut off valve is not getting power and I can't think of anything else to check. I have a wire going from my radio to the shut off valve that makes it and the glow plugs work, but throws a code and puts it in limp mode, but it is still drivable. With out that wire, I get no glow plugs and no start. I've tried everything I can think of, do I have the wrong relay? I have a good 109 relay in the bottom right of the fuse box and a good 180 relay below the 50 amp fuse. I can't find anything to fix this. It has to be between the fuse box to the ecu or a mismatched relay. Any help would be appreciated, im out of ideas.

I'm just tossing this out there since it's a known issue with the A3/B3 wiring, but have you checked near the injection pump, specifically the collet? I've seen lots of these cars with chafed wiring due to it and some of the black/white wires broken.

Are you sure you're not getting power there?

If you turn on the key and take a few seconds to get to it to read it there will be no power on it. It drops out after a second or two but comes back on when you start cranking the engine. Need to use some clips for the meter leads so you can watch it when you turn the key on or to start.

If that checks out proceed as Abacus suggested.

Control (power) for N109 (fuel solenoid) comes from the ECU at pin 53 to the round T24 connector near the engine and then to a T3 connector at the IP itself before being attached to the N109.

Mark is right, check your wiring hidden by the corrugated tubing, it can hide any measure of problems.

Yes the wire is fine past the 24 pin connector, I checked continuity to that point and visually inspected of course

No power at all. No glow plugs either when hooked up in original configuration

Just checked, I have continuity from the shut off valve to the ecu, that entire wire

I also have power from the ecu to the fuse box. I'm hoping I have the wrong relay somewhere. I'll attach a picture

Your 109 relay is in the wrong place....look at this sticky on page one for A3 relay locations. I had wondered about that when you first mentioned something about 109 and the location on the fuse / relay panel...it didn't sound right to me.

EDIT: here's the photo for Mk3 TDI cars from that thread I mentioned:

That's why we have this forum, so things can hopefully get fixed.

I was thinking when you mentioned a new 109 and blah blah blah that something wasn't quite right but since you said the 180 was above the panel I just let it go. When you posted that photo I knew that the 109 wasn't in the right place.

Glad it fixed it....and don't ever put anything in that spot where your 109 was...bad things can happen!!!

Yeah my buddy told me to put the 180 in the 109 spot yesterday, burned the **** out of my hand and now my dash lights don't turn on until it's running. But oh well big issue fixed. Thanks again

What's that plug for?

For Mk2 cars it was for fuel pump relay or diesel glow plug relay, but it was abandoned after 1996 in B4 and Mk3 TDI with the advent of the remote 180 relay. I don't recall whether Mk3 gas cars used it for fuel pump relay but they might have.

There shouldn't be anything in that position on a Mk3 TDI car.
