Are you guys ready to have a last laugh? At the rate the fuel prices are going up I think we will be at $4/gal for regular here in Texas in couple months if not sooner. Currently the price is $3.60/gal regular and $4/gal diesel.

I was also looking at CA fuel prices and the difference between regular and diesel is even less there something like only 25 cents. The regular is already $4.20/gal there.

I think in couple months we will see unreal demand of all fuel efficient cars and more so on Passat TDIs being a more practical car.

I am not a gas guzzler bashing person, merely stating my observations. I still own three gas guzzlers:D One driven by wife.........no wonder she wants me to drive everywhere we go.;)

Yep. You NMS guys are gonna have it made. Fuel is already at $4/gallon here in the DC area.

Still on the fence about a Passat. Don't want a car payment, but we could sell three out of the five vehicles and have enough for a 50+% down payment.

Somethings got to give? would that charcoal grey model in Fall River MA give you a leg up with a decent sized down payment?

I use to daily drive my 2002 7.3 Crew Cab 4x4 truck. I use to spend about $420/mth in diesel with it. I daily drive the Passat now and my diesel cost is only about $150/mth.
The truck stays mainly because it is a great no maintenance truck that is in great shape in and out and I will probably never have enough courage to spend money on a big truck like that. I don't do much with the truck except tow my Jeep few times a year.

Diesel is about 4.19 this week it was 4.13 last week. Gas about 4.10 or so if you shop around. You can find prices in excess of 4.50 if you don't shop it.

I traded in my Toyota FJ Cruiser about 3 weeks ago and have been smiling since, I have almost 3 x as much range with my new Passat and I can hear the radio!

Shop it? LOL! Yeah, right we are just lazy I guess. I do shop the variation is only about $.02 a gallon.

We have limited brands in Washington State and they all coordinate. There is no free market or competition here, so Shopping the price is not the solution.

I know what you mean. I traded a heavily modded 2007 FJ Cruiser for the Golf TDI. Added about 1000 lbs of metal to it in the 5 years I had it. Got about 350 kms on a tank. It was used for offroading a lot. I miss it. Going from 15 mpg to about 43 mpg puts the smile back on my face.:D

I've been trying to avoid doing that. It's all down hill once I go for a test drive.

Springfield VW is 2 minutes from our house... been avoiding them, too.

In all seriousness, I think we're considering moving forward with a purchase this summer. The charcoal gray one in MA is tempting because of the good price and immediate availability, but I think I'd rather squirrel away a few more dollars, sell the other vehicles and buy the Passat outright if we can.

The truck has been parked for several months with the exception of a couple drives to work, get fireword and other truck-related activities. It manages to get almost 20 mpg on the highway, but the 15.8 mpg around-town average is killer when fuel prices are this high. Fortunately my commute is only 7.5 miles each way these days.

Jason and I have been sharing cars - he drives the 350SDL and I drive the 99.5 TDI or the 91 ECOdiesel. I've been enjoying 35 - 45 mpg for a while and he gets paid mileage for work. Win win!

That's ok we pay equivalent $4.75 per gallon / $1.25 per litre in Canada. We also pay about 10-20% more for vehicles even the ones built here!

Everyone, and I mean literally everyone, around me drives a truck. I always chuckle a little bit when I am filling up. I make the commute between Camdenton, MO and Springfield, MO very often and am thankful for the mpgs. Around here a lot of people have to make the 80 mile trip because NOTHING is in our area besides a lake.

I don't understand why people buy the big gassers then complain when they have to fill up. All things considered my passat is still pretty cheap mode of communication.

Sold my beloved Suburban last month. Tired of filling the 42gal tank.
My wife refuses to give up her Suburban. I guess part of the reason is she can afford it and she only has a 4 miles one way commute to work. On the long trips she insists on taking the Suburban for the family of four and everything that goes with it. We have a trip coming up which is about 1500 miles round trip and I suggested we take the Passat and she was like nope we will take the Suburban, it is safer and more comfortable.

VeeDubTDI, my truck is a crew cab and it is 4x4, it only gives me about 14 mpg in town.

Not really true, especially compared to the Passat.
Obviously you have never owned a Suburban. There is no arguing that Suburban is a more comfortable vehicle. It is most definitely more safer too.
Now I am not saying everyone should drive Suburban or other tanks nor I am saying Passat is unsafe.

But for pure simple comparison purposes a big vehicle like Suburban would fare much better in a collision with another bigger vehicle than a Passat would. And as far as comfort goes, you will just have to go check it out for yourself. It is a bus:D

i am going to disagree/agree with you. if you took each car and ran them into a wall at a certain speed, i actually think the passat would fair better, secondly, we usually do not run our vehicles into walls or other cars, we tend to make a reflex move and try to swerve or avoid the accident. this is where the SUV performs even more poorly. It has a much much higher roll over rate and cannot evade objects as readily as a sedan can.

now in a two vehicle accident, the SUV may fair slightly better but please do not think that you are safer by any means. i do not know/understand why as a country we do not give a **** about our future or the environment. we dont recycle, we make fun of fuel efficient cars and insist that we need our tahoes and monster trucks to haul around a lawnmower or for "comfort", we ignore and moreover refuse to address our blatently obvious problems whether they be environmental or fiscal in the name of "comfort" and "safety"

Big SUV's like the suburban are prone to rollovers. High CG and poor handling characteristics combine. Rollovers are a big percentage of SUV injury accidents. It is much less likely for a car like a passat to flip multiple times and eject passengers.

Also, many wrecks involve hitting immovable objects like retaining walls, big trees, bridge abutments. In those, the extra weight of the SUV does little good. The car may fair better as unibody is better designed for gradual deceleration.

And a nimble car has a better chance of avoiding a wreck, and that does not enter the statistics at all.

I shake my head when someone touts the safety of these big suv's. Probably only safer in a small percentage of injury type wrecks.

I just drove a new 4wd Sierra to help a friend. Same chassis as Suburban. I could not believe how sloppy the handling was on that thing. I guess I am spoiled by driving my car, and rarely ever a big truck.

There is nothing safer for a driver that does not know what they are driving and how to drive it.
What you guys are referring to is user stupidity. I would never drive an SUV the way I drive my Passat or how I drove my Honda Accord before. I sure as hell don't plan on driving into walls and polls.
As a matter of fact I seldomly drive much higher than posted speeds.
If I worry accidents it is usually other drivers that I worry not so much about my driving. Also much vulnerable are the side impacts and not so much a frontal and rear end crash.

Again we are talking about people running into you and not you running into people. Recently a friend of mine was in an accident with an 18 wheeler running into him head on and he was in a F250. The truck was totaled and was really in a bad shape but the impact never reached the passenger compartment. He walked away from the crash without a scratch. Yes he was hurting for few days due to impact but he never got hit directly from anything, his windshield was intact as well.

Just for the record, I do agree that cars (small, mid and large) are getting more safer and safety should not be the reason everybody should drive around in tank like vehicles.

Also agree with other posters, you don't argue with wifes in such topics.:D My wife did think I was crazy for adding a 4th vehicle and to the fleet and that to a 6MT. She can drive a 6MT but just has no interest in driving one, thus she never touches the Jeep and the Passat:)
