I've done a search and can't find answers for the new Jetta TDI.

Are fuel filter changes on the 2011 Jetta TDI's any different than previous years? When changing the filter is there a manual water drain, a manual prime button, and a manual bleed valve? Or is the fuel filter self priming when I crank the engine over? The drain, prime, and bleed valves are features on the previous trucks I've owned.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like I'll be having the dealer perform fuel filter changes for me. At least while I'm still under warranty. It's not a terribly complicated process but they could have made it easier. Seems VW designed this set up to ensure their mechanics would have some mainentance work as the average Joe won't be doing this himself. I can only imagine how many people unknowingly change their fuel filters without priming causing damage over time.

I'm use to the screw on filters like my trucks. Takes me literally 3-5 minutes to do on the trucks.

There really is nothing difficult about changing the fuel filter on this engine. This is what the dealer will do: remove the screws from the canister lid, open the lid, remove the old filter, (if you're lucky, they'll syphon the old fuel out or remove the 3 nuts holding the filter canister in and dump the fuel out), install new filter, add clean fuel and/or fuel additive, install gaskets, install lid, start engine.

The in-tank fuel pump can be hot-wired to run and prime/purge the system.

If you have the dealer change it at 40k, I would bet they'd charge ~$100 part & labor minimum. BUT, the 20k mile service includes a fuel filter change, so if you take the car to the dealer for the "free" services, you don't need to worry about a cost.

If you update your profile to mention your region, one of the many people with VCDS/VagCom may offer to help you with the fuel filter change.
