I followed the DYI on the fuel filter change. Worked like a charm. Have a 2006 (fuel filter with two holes). I beleive that is the older version of the filter.

Anyway, One thing I did was use a turkey baster to take out the fuel....now what? How do you dispose of about 10oz of dirty fuel? or is it ok to put back into the tank. Put it in an old washer fluid bottle. Can't say the bottle was completely clean of washer fluid. But there could not have been anymore than an eye dropper worth in it.

What do you guys do?

ps- thread on procedure to change out was excellent.

Look for a place the recycles used motor oil near you. Most likely they should take your used fuel. I would not dump it back into the tank if you used an old washer fluid bottle.

Yea, I put mine in the farm tractor.

Of course, I don't put the left over fuel from changing the tractor's fuel filter back in the tractor, b/c that stuff is really, really, really dirty. Makes the TDI left over fuel look freshly washed  !

I use it to start the BBQ, smoker, burn pile, chiminea, run in the shop heater, spray it to kill weeds, etc.......anything but put it back in the tank and risk contamination.

Eeeeh...dunno about that...
I use Startron on a regular basis, that'll keep contamination under control.

First, I wouldn't even bother with the turkey baster. Second, the fuel in the filter canister is not any more dirty than the fuel from the gas station pump, it is just waiting to go through the filter where any dirt is captured.

Put it back in the tank.

I don't bother emptying the filter canister, just put in new filter, top off and go. Any residual fuel I had would be mixed with used motor oil and go to the recycling center. JOHN

Hey, any water will be in the bottom of the reservoir. you'd might as well aspirate the bottom inch out to look for water. most won't have water, but if you do have it........you'd want to remove it.

I mix it with waste motor oil as I use my topsider oil change unit to empty the filter housing out. It cleans the bottom crud layer from my tank....

This is a "Don't ask ... don't tell" issue...... IMO.

Of course, I live out in the boonies..where among other issues, we can burn our burnable trash items in a burn barrel... or ....

I mix about 2 parts of waste diesel with 1 part used engine oil, and keep it in a sprinkling can (like for watering flowers). It makes a great fire starter for brush piles and the like...the oil gives it some cling when I sprinkle it on the pile, so it doesn't just end up in the dirt. Not explosive like gasoline. I've seen some dumb guys really toast themselves starting fires with gasoline (usually on the third match).
