I am selling my 1999 VW New Beetle TDI 5sp ALH (Yellow) because I have been traveling a lot for work and no longer drive. Instead of having the car sit for another 2 years, I thought I would just sell it. I would typically get around 45mpg.

It has a 5 speed transmission. It has 309k miles on it and the last timing belt change was done at 307k. So, you have almost a full 100k on this timing system before needing to worry about having it changed again.

I have always used Mobile TDT or Rotella 5x40 full synth oil in it.

The only three issues I know of are the fuel door release not clicking shut (common on NB), power window switch on driver's side has a broken piece of plastic, and a crack in the windshield (passenger side). The switch would be simple to replace, I just haven't bothered because it still works fine.

I have several mods on the car as well.
- Vented the fuel tank
- Race pipe (intake was cleaned as well)
- PP520 injectors
- 11mm IP
- RocketChip stage 3 chipped
- Bilstein TC suspension on all 4 corners
- McNally Boost/EGT
- 2 pod Brendt
- skid plate
- New control arms bushings
- Removed the snow screen in the intake
- New battery (6 months old)
- Tow hitch
- brakes and rotors within past 10k
- 109 Relay
- MAF
- Ball joints
- Glow Plug Harness
- Thermostat
- E-Brake Cables
- Coolant Temp Sensor
- Glow Plugs
- Sway Bar Bushings
- etc

That's over $1500 in parts alone in the past 18 months.

The 99 has a LUK clutch so even with the mods, it is holding strong.
I know the miles sound like a lot, but the car is it terrific shape.
Non-smoking car.

I know someone looking for a VW. I'll forward this on to her. We're not far (Chicago-land). If she would like more pictures, can you supply some?

Need to put in a larger clutch. The LUK is right on the bubble or holding back the mods.

I would give IDParts a call and give them a rundown of the mods i listed.

- PP520 injectors
- 11mm IP
- RocketChip stage 3 chipped
- Stock turbo

Bayshorecs,
loving the car. so far have not done anything but put a Yakima rack on it, but it will be time for a clutch soon. should I go with another LUK clutch or consider a different aftermarket option?

My car is the same minus the 11mm pump. I have an SBC Stage 2 DAILY with a single mass flywheel in my car and I couldn't be happier

Bayshorecs and GarretSR5,
I called IDParts and they recommended the same kit Garret used

Garret,
did you do the install yourself?
If so, what other parts did you reglace while you were in there?
Which flywheel did you go with?

This is South Bend's Stage 2 Daily clutch kit for VWs. It replaces the OE dual mass flywheel with a South Bend Clutch 22 lb. single mass flywheel, or you can choose a 14 lb. South Bend flywheel at the same cost. This clutch has a heavy duty pressure plate that allows increased clamping with little or no increase in pedal pressure. The organic disc material has a high metal content that more than doubles the drag coefficient while maintaining stock feel and durability. This kit will fully meet the needs of all but the most highly modified TDIs. The kit includes pressure plate, clutch disc, throw-out bearing, bolts, and alignment tool. 22, 17 and 14 lb SBC flywheels are available as well as a less expensive non-SBC alternative.

I put the standard G60 22lbs flywheel.

I think the starter is easy to replace with the clutch out so I would plan to do that at the same time. It is original and a pain to access so worth doing at the same time in my opinion.

I did two starters, wasn't that bad. Get at from underneath, use u-joints and plenty of extensions.

That sucks!

I still miss the performance of that car. It was fun to drive.
it does. i loved driving it. had a lot of fun in the mountains of WV with it on my way to and from New River Gorge Bridge Day. I will try my best to get it back on the road soon

still don't have the car on the road...
but it turns out the turbo failed dumping oil into the cylinders causing the motor to run away. Dubwerx in Cincy scoped the cylinders and did not find damage to the tops of the pistons, but the motor does not turn over easily
i am having it towed back to my place.
should i wait until it warms up and swap engines on the street (no garage) or part out the car?

Do a compression test & see where you stand. Maybe you'll get lucky, or have someone put a head on the motor if you did any damage. Do yourself a favor & have a local GURU take a look at it - can prob fix that motor cheaper / easier than putting a used unit in it.

When my wagon broke a timing belt Mr. Chill @ Kraftwerke fixed that motor that was in there, was cheaper than putting a used (and un-known) motor in it. A set of rods, a new head & I was back in business.

Weigh all options, car is worth good money in parts with all those mods. Good Luck!
