When I purchased this car, this length of ownership was assumed. With that expectation, whenever any item required repair, it was done immediately. I have performed most maintenance and repairs myself using oem parts typically through IDparts.com or other reputable sources. Oil changes have always been Mobil Delvac 1 ESP. Fuel has been 90%+ premium diesel.

2005 Passat Wagon (BHW/5-spd conv, 03T). I keep in touch with the (2) ALH's I sold.
When was the last suspension refresh? What was all completed?

Why was the head rebuilt? (just for the cam upgrade)

Glove Box Broken? (Hard to tell)

For being a Michigan car, after almost 20 years, how did you keep it so rust free?

Most Recent Suspension:

Right Tie Rod - 3/30/19 @ 310,955
Left Tie Rod - 10/28/18 @ 306,105
Right Strut (Billstein) - 7/19/18 @ 300,196 (It was leaking and replaced on warranty)
Front Wheel Bearings - 6/4/17 @ 278,608
Ball Joints - 5/28/17 @ 278,564
Strut Bearings - 4/30/17 @ 277,967
VR6 front Springs - 4/30/17 @ 277,967
TT Control Arm Bushings - 11/23/15 @ 252,863
Sway Bar Bushings - 11/23/15 @ 252,863

Suspension is not saggy. Having driven this car for 20 years, I would say, the suspension feels in pretty good shape. I've experienced all the symptoms and have been through evey inch of the suspension at least twice over time. I'd call the current feel an 8/10.

The head was rebuilt due to a sheared timing belt. I was busy with life, we were in the dead of winter. I was stretching for a day above 20 to tackle it. Parts were sitting on the shelf. Not a proud moment. I pulled the head and shipped to Frank0 in St. Louis for the rebuild. We added the cam then while in there. It's had another TB interval since.

Glove box is doing what they do. It is set up with magnets to hold it closed.

It's survived in this condition from a combination of frequent rinses in the winter and garage storage. At least once per year I pulled the splash guards to clear the leaves from behind the fenders. What a bad design that is capturing all the cowl debris against sheet metal. The fenders on there came from a 2002 Wolfsburg sedan. I bought the car for the fenders basically. They were rust free. When I installed them, I cleaned, primed and undercoated that area behind the fender for future mitigation. It has helped but as you see, some light bubbling is starting. The forward portion of the rockers have been replaced.

It's a good car but I want to represent it fairly. It's more fun to drive than our 14 JSW from an "operating the machine" standpoint. Always had snow tires for the winter. With those it is like a little tractor that just pushes through deep snow.

Nice wheels and seems to be pretty well taken care of, if I were in a different situation I would be interested l for sure.

What did you use for your replacement fuel lines? Material and sizes?

It’s been a while since I installed those lines. Somewhere on this site is a list of part numbers from McMaster Carr. It includes all the tubing and clamp sizes. Having visual on the air situation has been helpful I found.
