Problems:
The car stalled while I was warming it up on 11/2/10 and now sounds funny when it turns over. My guess - stripped timing belt that I never replaced. I took it on a 5 hour trip 10/30, so it hasn’t been sitting.

Turbo not engaging:
Took it to the dealer a couple years ago who said the turbo was ‘binding’ and they could free it up. That worked but didn’t last long. Turbo was replaced 3/2009 by a VW shop ($2,000), but it has stopped working again. My theory is that the actuator sticks, but they say you have to replace the whole turbo. Scanner shows P0299: Unidentified Fuel and Air Metering Error.

Glow Plugs:
I ‘twisted’ the #1 glow plug replacing it a couple years ago and was sick to my stomach for 3 days. But it was seated tightly and worked fine until recently. So that needs to be tapped out. Plugs # 3 & 4 also scan as bad, but it might be the contacts with the wiring harness which should be replaced.

Highlights:
Purchased new 11/2002.
Oil has always been changed on schedule using synthetic 5w40.
Tires replaced at 65,814 with Kumho Solus KH16 all-weather
Front brakes were done 7/2009.
Rear brakes were done 7/2006 when there was a problem with the rear calipers dragging.

Recently took it to a brake place due to some noise and was told brakes all around are “at 80%”. Doesn’t ring true to me, but they’re the experts. They also said the struts and shocks “look pretty good”.

New battery 1/2010
Sunroof works fine
No accidents, no damage.
Exterior is pretty close to perfect. Was garaged for most of it’s life.
Interior: good shape, no problems
I do not have service records, except for a few items like turbo, brakes, tires.
I have the engine cover.

Just recently became a TDI club member, but have been getting good advice here for some time (usually after I break something!). Unfortunately, my feeble mechanical skills put me at the mercy of the retail market place, so I hope someone here can use this.
Thanks,
Chris

I'll be the first to say you should contact Herm Pasker in Richmond Maine. He is one of our best TDI mechanics on the east coast and if you still have the stomach for it, he'll fix you up right as rain.

A manual Jetta with just over 100k miles?

Invest the $2000 (full retail) and fix it! At 100k it's just a pup, fixed properly it'll be good for another 200k easy. Where are you going to get a car for $2000 that'll (proven) give you 200k miles?

fix eet...

If I can book some time with Herm, I'll do just that!
