After 12 years of ownership I have decided to sell my 1997 VW Passat TDI. It is a Tornado Red sedan with black interior. Current mileage is 142,500.
Overall the body and paint are in very good shape for a 19 year old car. There are a few small rust spots on the lower portion of the doors, but the rocker panels and floorboards are all completely solid. The interior and upholstery are in very good condition. The A/C, power windows, power sunroof, and original VW radio all work fine. I installed genuine glass Hella E-code headlights and a European headlight switch, with I imported directly from Germany.
Recent maintenance includes a new battery, cooling system flush & fill with pink VW G12 antifreeze, oil change with Mobil 1 5W-40 oil and MANN filter, and new wiper blades. I got new tires and an alignment at 140k. The timing belt was done at 117k. Bilstein TC struts were put in around 100k and are still good.
The clutch and transmission operate smoothly and the engine starts and runs fine. One of the glow plugs was broken off during previous ownership so it only has 3 functioning glow plugs, but with a few glow plug cycles I've always been able to start it, even in cold weather. (I replaced the glow plugs and harness at 117k.) Also the injection pump leaks slightly during a cold start. Once it warms up it stops leaking fuel. A simple fix would be to construct a shield to keep it from leaking onto and damaging the coolant hoses underneath the injection pump, or you could replace the injection pump.
It has an NJ inspection sticker that's valid through June 2017. I have all of the service and fuel purchase records from during my ownership. Included with the car are 3 new air filters, 1 new MANN fuel filter, new vacuum hose and diesel fuel return line hose from IDParts, some leftover G12 antifreeze, 5W-40 oil, and Diesel Kleen additive, 2 wheel covers, all the original owner's manuals, and few other miscellaneous spare parts.
Asking $2500 OBO. The car is located in Somerset County, NJ. I will have a detailed 20-minute HD video tour of the car posted soon.
