Front Passenger Door Requires Two Pulls on Handle After Bodywork and Unlock

Firstly I fell asleep at 4:00PM about a week and a half ago and barely grazed a guardrail. It was a very very light hit (didn't even feel impact, just heard it) but the scrape touched my front wheel, the front bumper the front fender, both doors, the C-pillar and the rear bumper. What a pain.

So I took the car in for bodywork/repainting which involved removing the handles from the doors for repainting. Since I got it back, both doors have a similar problem. If they are locked then unlocked the handle must be pulled twice to open the door from the outside. The feeling is exacly like the rear doors act from the inside when locked. The child lock is not on, and when the doors do open the first time, after that it only requires one pull until they are locked again.

Obviously I am going to take it back for them to fix, but does anyone know the problem? I found a similar post that was never resolved, so I thought I'd try again.

I called the bodyshop and he stated it is just a matter of adjusting the screw for the locking mechanism in the handle. I'll be more specific after I watch him do it.

It's not a screw, but the little cable that has a plastic nub on the end. That nub goes into a slot on the handle.

It's not tight enough, there is too much slack. Easy fix but you need to know how to extract the lock cylinder or blank.

Look up the window regulator repair for pictrues.

Look here:

Tongsli, you didnt finish your last thought on where to look.

I guess the lucky/unlucky question is all about perspective.
Lucky is wasn't worse - yes
lucky the guard rail was there - maybe
or maybe I was just unlucky and that's why I fell asleep.

I was best man in a wedding the week of the incident and with the preperations, bachelor party, wedding/reception, I just wasn't sleeping three nights in a row. This was in addition to having to make the 1200 mi R/T commute. We were about 150 miles from home and I said to my ladyfriend, "Man I'm pretty tired." Thirty seconds later I woke up to the noise of $3,000 coming out of my pocket.

My only real regret is in my hastiness to get the car fixed before the Fest I didn't think much about my options for just replacing the bumpers/valences with something cooler for approx. the same cost. It is nice having back to new condition bumpers. They had started getting pretty beat up with rock chips and the rear got a nasty "not pulled in far enough in the garage" scrape.

Sorry, for some reason, the PDF's aren't opening up. In the Frequently Asked questions is the thread I did on replacing the window regulators.

In the PDF, I showed how to remove the lock which involves the cable that is causing your problem.
