I have a 2000 Jetta and the passenger tire is wearing badly on the outside along with some "clunking" noise when goin gover frost heaves. Does this sound like bad bushings and or ball joints or other components? The car has 197,000 miles on it now.

How much of it can be done on jackstands!

The usual answer to clunking over bumps is the sway bar bushings, but those don't cause uneven tire wear. My guess, without looking of course, would be either ball joint or strut bearing.

You'll have to get the tire off the ground to check for either of these, and they can be fixed on jackstands, but you'll probably want an alignment afterward to make sure you get it back to spec.

And if you are renewing one side with the strut bearings, you may as well do both sides.
