Driving second hand 2001 Jetta TDI. Have driven for one year. My question is how to contact someone with knowledge of possible sluggish performance. I am not familiar with TDI. This is my first. My location is between Baltimore, Maryland and Annapolis, Maryland. My e-mail is <janpride2@hotmail.com> Thanks for any time taken to answer.

Wrecked and gone: VW Jetta wagon 2002 silver TDI
The dust/pollen ("cabin") filter question -- I know they're not difficult to find, for example can buy them from impexfap.com or drivewire.com on the internet; and on my vehicle (2002 Jetta TDI wagon) it was just a 4-screw access plate on the passenger side, just below the hood and by the windshield wiper (then press-release the 2 plastic tabs on the housing lid, to release and remove).

The "sluggish" (loss of power) question -- I know that's covered (pretty nicely) in the TDI FAQ on this site; Larry.

Re sluggish performance: Could be applicable...TURBO back to life now! See my related comment below....

Same problem with my Passat 1.9 TDi UK Model...Fault code 17964-P1556 Charge Pressure Contr. Negative Deviation(friend checked it for me).
That in itself does not mean a lot other than Turbo did not reach Boost Pressure....Now to find the actual fault is more tricky. Note that I am new to this but have tried spraying the actuator to the booster and things are ok for now. When starting the engine this did not move very much but after spraying it with some lubricant/wd40 it moved more. Keep an eye on this actuator whilst someone else start and the revs the car. My fault also cleared when engine lost power and then was switched off and then back on.
Anyone else reading this can comment and tell me if they think different please. It turned out so far not to be the MAF Sensor.....will see if above has cured it.
Look at this link...this guy deserves a medal...just what we need on tech forums!!!!

I had sluggish performance and read the FAQ's Pulling the plug on the MAF revealed that that was indeed the source of the trouble (if you unplug it and get better performance that is probably it). I took it into the dealership for a confirmation. This is MAF is really covered well in the forums. Good luck

This lonesome little message on bad AM reception strikes a cord in me. My 2002 Jetta TDI exhibits the same terrible AM reception. I have frequently wondered whether myantenna might be broken or grounded somehow. But, FM seems to be normal. Perhaps it is just the nature of the radio to be so poor in AM reception. Doesn't anyone out there have some positive experiance in rectifying the problem??? Dave.

It is the antenna. I had the same issue and tried the tuning cap inside the cassette door. No improvement. Had the dealer replace the antenna under warranty and all is good. I don't have a clue if they just replaced the screw in whip or if they pulled a whole new antenna wire. Try swapping wipps with another Jetta.

Question about hard to start issue and comment about radio issue

My car has become recently hard to start. Yes, I'm waiting for the glow plugs to finish their job. When the car does start, it emits a cloud of black smoke. Read the FAQ's and nothing seemed to apply. I recently had all the glow plugs replaced as one went bad and decided to have the rest of them done. I did get the old working ones back. The problem started shortly after that. The service place thought the car was running too rich, is that possible ????

In regards to some of the points about the AM radio reception, the AM antenna connection is not that great (it's separate from the FM one) - I've had to have my dealer reconnect it twice - it comes loose at the back of the radio (not the whip portion). Another time there was a connection problem at the base of the whip and that had to be replaced. All done under warranty.

It would be nice if the FAQ was updated. It was last done when I bought my car and ALOT of facts have changed since then!

Why cant some of our riteous members gettogether and update the FAQ and/or write a VW TDI manual on maintence and upgrades.

Look up and research the Open Source Software movement, we should model off of them

<Blush> Newbie wants pointers for oil change on A4

Ok, OK, I've been doing my own oil changes for years on a succession of VWs, including the latest, a '98 GTI VR6 which met a deer one dark and stormy night 2 months ago, but would some kind soul give me a list of tools, socket sizes, etc. + any hints, tips and watchoutfors to do this. I got myself one of those beachball oil extractors, so I don't have to dork with the belly pan...

Broken air vents

Ok-I can't be the only person this has happened to! Several of the dash vents on my 98 Beetle don't work in unison. I guess the clips that control from the rear of the vents have come loose. To change air direction of the vent each slat has to be moved individually. Help!!

You can get to the connectors for the two center vents easily after sliding out the radio. If you have the same problem as I had, you then just need to pop the ball on the connctor back into its plastic socket on the air control wheel.
Hope that helps.

Poor Radio reception

I have a 99 Jetta TDI with horrible AM reception. Is this common and anything I can do? Thanks
My 2004 Golf suddenly lost good reception in AM and FM. I traced it back to the roof mounted antenna. Had to remove part or ceiling liner to remove the antenna, took it apart to find moisture got inside and rusted through a wire. I spliced on (soldiered) a wire and great reception returned.

The base of the antenna is an amplifier so if you can replace just that you are all set.
Also some amplifiers need a 12 V feed. If your replacement amp needs that and you don't want to pull a new wire to the radio, find a feed in the rear that's always on like the power outlet in the rear of wagons.

I suggest you first try some fuel injector cleaner, this may just take care of the problem without spending lots of bucks needlessly. I have also removed water that collects in the fuel filter or put system cleaner spefically for diesel fuel that will dissipate the water from the line. Both have worked for me in the past. Just make sure they are for diesel fuel in either case.

Will the FAQs be updated anytime soon?
Looks like the last ones were done in Oct. 2003, which was 11 years ago already.
