I have come across the term "free maintenance" in various posts over the past few months. Even the VW tech bulletin referred to in a recent post in the "Fuels and Lubricants" section http://mach.mach-nine.com/gti/vwtechcontent/pdf/v179901.PDF refers to free maintenance. Did I miss something the dealer may have told me when I was picking up my 2002 Golf TDI back in April? I really don't recall anything being mentioned about being free. What is the story on "free maintenance"?

You didn't miss anything. "Free" maintenance was for model years ending with 2001 TDI models (and all other VWs). This was where the 5k, 10k, and 20k mile service was free, as long as the car's milage was under 24,000.

On the other hand, you have two additional years of bumper to bumper coverage.
