Even if the Ford Focus got better gas mileage than the TDI, in the end, you would still be driving a Ford Focus. I'm just saying.
YesThere are other things to look at besides fuel economy.
For one thing, VW interiors blow away the competition from the US or Japan.
Just close the door of a Golf (thud)and then a US or Japanese car (twang).
Secondly, all gasoline powered cars that get very good fuel economy, only come in an automatic type transmission, are not very attractive and not very exciting to drive.

Some would say the same thing about the Jetta. It is not exactly awe inspiring in the looks department.Even if the Ford Focus got better gas mileage than the TDI, in the end, you would still be driving a Ford Focus. I'm just saying.
It would help if you knew why its more expensive. Europe and O&G groups has nothing to do with it BTW. Don't forget that the same oil companies have to purchase diesel to explore, develop, extract, and deliver their product at a similar rate you pay.The government is letting the oil industry rip us off on diesel. I called my Senator and asked why is diesel more expensive than gas. He said because Europe is willing to pay more for diesel! What kind of BS is that?
They lost several of the designers to Hyundai/Kia a couple years ago and think it starting to show as the new optima looks far better than any new VW. Add that to the solid rear axle and brake drums and VW is starting to resemble the Honda/Toyota path of producing toasters to the masses.^Although I must agree with that.. the new Jettas look much too gay for my tastes. The golfs are great... the sportwagens are nice.. but the regular jetta's took a HUGE step back in the looks department in my opinion.
Toasters are money makers. Look at the Camry and Accord. They lost several of the designers to Hyundai/Kia a couple years ago and think it starting to show as the new optima looks far better than any new VW. Just chiming in that I find the new Optima to be a very good looking car.. . . the new optima looks far better . . .
Agreed! I really like the look of the Optima, Elantra/Sonata/Genesis.Just chiming in that I find the new Optima to be a very good looking car.
Still a short term gain for a long term loss. You cant build loyalists and followers when every new product is slightly worse than your last. I use to be a huge Toyota fan and now they have boring toasters and week overweight trucks.Toasters are money makers. Look at the Camry and Accord.
Unfortunately the highly stylized cars don't seem to sell as well so the manufactures don't like to make too many of them. They just like to create concepts for the auto shows then mass produce something more bland.
I hear ya. My Prius is paid off and as much as I like the newer models, especially the Prius c, I simply cannot justify ditching my GenII. The fuel savings are so small even if the Prius c gets 60mpg like we hope. I'm just going to run this car until it dies and fixing it is not economically feasible.Still a short term gain for a long term loss. The new Prius is much better than our older GenII but for the money i would buy either a optima or focus as the mpg is good enough IMO. A Golf TDI would be on list if they would fix their current time bomb issues. All of our cars/trucks are paid for so it will take something special to talk me back into payments. The optima would be there if they offered a manual gearbox but since they don't its just good for looking at![]()
Wow really?! That explains why those cars are starting to look kinda decent lol. Not that I'd ever consider buying one...They lost several of the designers to Hyundai/Kia a couple years ago and think it starting to show as the new optima looks far better than any new VW. Then why are you on a TDI board lol. Not being an ass, just curious.I hear ya. To learn more about these cars. I spend a lot of time talking about cars and even help out as a panelist on WhatDrives.Us, an alternative fuel/technology podcast. As such I like to be as educated as possible in my discussions. So instead of just blasting turbo diesels like so many other hybrid drivers do I would rather learn their pros and cons so I can correct people when they are wrong. We have some TDI owners on our forum and their corrections to hyperbole against diesels is the main reason I came here. To look for facts instead of myths. What better place to become educated than a TDI forum? Then why are you on a TDI board lol. Not being an ass, just curious.
That happens on pretty much every forum.Interesting reason for joining up. Welcome! There's some behind the scenes doosbaggery around here, but for the most part there's a lot of good people that are very well educated on these TDI's.
I remember that forum! lolHaha wow your all over the place! I was on cz28 for many years (amongst many many others)
I saw that article, too. The reason Nixon did it was because too many foreign governements were saying all at once, "thank you very much, we'll take you up on your offer to give us our money in gold".I saw an article the other day placing most of the blame on Nixon for removing the gold backing of the US dollar. Imagine how strong the dollar would be today with gold trading near $2000 an ounce!
