Recently I had my 2009 Jetta TDI in the shop for routine maintenance. The vehicle currently has 85,000 miles. The mechanic which I trust recommended that I trade this vehicle when it reached 100,000 miles. To date I have had the exhaust flap, both cooling fans (one twice), sway bar links, and the intake manifold replaced. I have also replaced the front and rear brake pads and rotors, and tires twice.
What is the experience others have had with 2009 TDI over 100,000 miles? Does it stay reliable, or go down hill fast?

My '09 DSG has 143K on the clock and I have done nothing but scheduled maintenance, tires, etc. I recently changed the brake pads on both the front and rear even though the fronts had 3/4 pad remaining. I have always used a fuel additive, mostly Opti-Lube. My Jetta sees almost all highway miles and I travel approximately 4K a month. No issues yet, knock on wood.

I have just under 130k on mine.

no real issues, except for some suspension work. and what turned out to be CV joints.

I replaced shocks, struts, front hub bearings and axles. and new subframe mount bolts. (did brake disks and pads while the whole thing was apart, but they were ok, except had a bit of surface scale.)

I had one oil into coolant leak at the oil cooler, and an external leak in a line that dumped some oil when it was a few years old, and well before it hit 100k

other than that, hanging in there. I like it now that the front end is all bolted back where it should be.

I can't get rid of it, have to get my money out of the lifetime sat radio deal.

Sounds like someone is trying to make some commission. 130k+ on my 09, 240k on my 06, I have seen 2009's with 300k on them recently for sale.

Sure,

I did most of the work myself. (and will not list cost for wrenches, jacks, stands, lights bits, drills, hammers and the like) (nor post-work beverages)

Hubs/Bearings $150 each from Blau Parts
http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=F7W1022-D

Axles from Raxles were $250 plus shipping per side (I called them chasing a vibration after the install, and they were very good on a replacement, even though now I am sure the first one they sent was just fine) I paid a local mechanic around $170 to change them, but did the installation of the replacement left side myself in the garage.

I got the struts and brakes from idparts,

1 x Complete Suspension Bolt Set - Struts and Shocks (A5) $31.95
2 x Front Strut Boot (A5) $19.90
1 x Metalnerd 21+22mm Strut Wrench $45.95
1 x Metalnerd Strut Spreader Tool (A4)(A5) $15.95
1 x Front Brake Set for SportWagen & Cup Edition [312mm]
- Brake Pads: Textar
- Rotor Option: Zimmerman $190.95 2 x Front Caliper Carrier to Spindle Bolt (A5 & Sportwagen) $10.40
2 x Stabilizer Link (A5) $69.90
1 x OE Replacement Strut and Shock Set [Optimal] (A5)(MkVI Golf)
- Front Strut Mounts:
- Front Bump Stops:
- Rear Shock Mounts: Oval
- Rear Bump Stops (Select): Oval $509.60

and the bolts for the subframe from ECS Tuning, and from a local dealer. around $30 after returning a few I did not need which were in a subframe kit. also a couple more bolts after pulling back springs to get to the rear shocks.

Time wise, I spread out over a couple/three weekends, made separate jobs of the front and rear, and the axles turned into a follow-on job in between. I take my time. both to be safe and to enjoy the project.

call it $1700 and a couple fun weekends. (prices are all subject to change)

It really does ride nice now.

I have 187000 and have original front rotors and pas, but just changed rear pads and rotors due to hung up caliper, I have original wheel bearings in front etc.. Oil changes and filters all on time with no attitive. I run it hard, but I always maintained everything. About to replace flapper motor both for exhaust and intake.

i wouldn't worry about 100K miles... I just bought a '09 jetta with 362,000. deleted the DPF (it was plugged) and had to replace the turbo actuator (was the original stock turbo and actuator). Looks like I may be replacing a wheel bearing soon, but other than that, just racking up lots of miles with not much fuel...

2009 TDI with 6MT currently at 103,000 miles and nothing happened until I had the fuse box recall performed. Now I have had nothing but electrical gremlins for the last 3 weeks.

* Original tires replaced at 70,000 miles, along with a battery (normal wear)
* Rear brake pads at 40,000. Front brake pads still pass inspection. In my case, almost 100% highway miles with little braking and little stop-and-go traffic.
* Replaced the A/C compressor at about 101,000 (as the RCV replacement did not alleviate the A/C delay. Now it works fine.)

If someone would have told me to get rid of my 2009 TDI at 100,000 miles, I would have laughed. 3,000 miles later, and I am beginning to doubt the little car and started dreaming about my next car.

Purchased my 09 new. Has not been back to the dealer since last free oil change at 30K miles. All I have done is put a new set of Michelins on at 60k, rear pads at 70k, and change oil myself every 10k.
I have 105k on it now, and will pay Jason to do the timing belt. This is the 1st Volkswagen I have owned, and quite frankly was a little nervous buying it due to the bad rap people gave VW and the DSG really made me nervous. Having said that, this car has been the best vehicle I have ever owned in my 50 years. No rust, no rattles, drives as tight as the day I bought it. It has been easy to work on also. Oil changes are real easy and the hardest part is taking the plastic cover off on the bottom. DSG oil change also very easy to do.
I have driven many new cars in my employment also, and just now started driving a 2015 Explorer. This thing has more rattles in it with 4k miles than the 09 Jetta with over 100k!

My 09 has 85k on it:

Actuator Motor
Rear Door Lock
Front Wheel bearing/hub assembly
Blower Motor
Brakes

Needs:
Front Struts

While none of this has been especially difficult or expensive, it has been a royal PITA for a car with less than 100k miles.

My next car will go back to gas - don't think the daily gas savings will be greater than the maintenance costs down the road.

I purchase my 2009 new and currently have over 150k miles. I use fuel additive at every fill up and have always perform regular maintenance. No major issues...Still going strong!

You are responding irrationally - our 1998 Jetta TDI has been the best investment in a car I have ever made. At 17 years old and 235,000 miles, it still runs like new, and virtually everything is still factory original, except regular maintenance items, and A/C compressor (we live in FL!!!).

This is with MINIMAL maintenance, such as changing oil every 20K miles, fuel filters every 40K miles, 1st coolant change at 180K miles, etc., etc. :D

Oil Consumption ?

Anyone with 150K+ miles experiencing oil consumption? I just started noticing it at the last oil change. I currently have almost 159K. Around 145K and at the 150K oil change I noticed the oil level low. Until now I have never had any oil consumption. I might add 1/4 to 1/2 bottle per 10K miles. I hope this isn't the sign of something bad down the road.

I'm wondering if having a DPF delete would cause oil consumption. June 2014 at 141K miles I had the DPF delete and Malone tune. Car still runs great!

I'm glad to see a 2009 with that many miles. I plan to give this car to one of my kids in about 2 years. Should be close to 185K by then.

100k miles is a binary point. It'll either work out from there, or it won't. Certainly has not for me. Bought new 2009 JSW and meticulously maintained. Didn't prevent:
DSG fail @ 110k miles
DPF fail @ 140k miles
Sunroof drain fails
Electrical gremlins with door locks and TPMS.
Think carefully about the DPF. If you have to replace to remain compliant with local emissions testing, it's $5,500 for new parts. You may get lucky and find cheap replacements from people here who have done a DPF delete.

Oh yeah, my 2009 with 227,000 miles has not been trouble free.
Not too bad with the A/C, DPF,turbo actuator and roof leak.
I have added the 2 Micron system to help with potential HPFP problems.

2009 jetta tdi with dsg. 138,000 miles. Had to replace exhaust flapper, one door lock actuator, one dpf pressure sensor, and the dual mass flywheel. Replaced front and rear pads years ago to different brand trying to eliminate annoying brake squeal. Still on those pads and original rotors. Brakes never squeal on my 2012, probably different rotor material I'm guessing?

125K on mine, DPF was replaced at 80K, VW took care of 1/2 of the cost of replacement. And auxiliary pump was leaking got replaced at 62K. Original front-rear brake pads, and the tires replaced only once.
Everything else is in good condition and still delivering low 50's consistently at highway speeds. Very happy with the car particularly the low rpm pulling power.

178k miles.

Normal wear and tear for the most part. Just put a new set of tires on at 174k (the Michelin Harmony ones from the dealer I bought it at lasted nearly 100k miles).

Breakdowns / unexpected repairs:
Clutch master cylinder plugged up during flush (140k-ish) $160-200 for parts (did labor myself)
HPFP failure at 167k (VWOA paid for all but fuel disposal and refuel)
Clutch slave and master failed immediately after HPFP $1200

I now run biodiesel at 2% after reading about lubricity (bosch HFRR presentation and Spicer Report).

Sometimes I wonder if I should get rid of my car or not. I'm at 97,xxx miles and all that went was an O2 sensor which wasn't hard to replace. So far so good. Probably just jinxed myself
