I think that people have commented that it has lost it's distinctive look, not that it is ugly. Some reviewers have said it looks like a Toyota Corolla. Funny story about that. I was out and about in the Jetta on Saturday with a friend. When we came out of breakfast, he said he couldn't find my car bacause it was black and looked like all the other 4-door sedans. I called bull**** and said it looked nothing like the other cars parked on the street. Later on, after dinner, we walked out of the restaurant and I walked up to a--wait for it--Ford Fusion and wondered why my key fob wasn't opening the doors. My Jetta was two cars down and my friend was standing next to it waving "Over here." I like the looks of the Jetta, though it doesn't compare to my last car, a Dodge Challenger, which was pure beauty. I actually prefer the interior of the Jetta even though it uses hard plastic where the Challenger used softer materials. I like the Leatherette versus the cloth on my last car. The lesson of the day was efficiency over looks. On the same trip I would have been lucky to get 25 MPG in the Challenger. I got 41 MPG in the Jetta. Over a 250 mile trip, that amounts to ~$15 savings. I'll take that over distinctive looks.
