While I don't think I would ever do it to my car, I would not expect any difference in cost.

There's a pretty good looking Beetle in Charlottetown, PEI I saw a few times this summer with flat black paint and some nice wheels, hope someone has a photo somewhere you can decide if it's something you want to stick with.

Getting an even finish with satin paint is much harder than what most people would think. It's not like regular high gloss paint where you can wet sand and buff a run or remove orange peel. It's a shoot and hope you've got it right the 1st time or you'll be doing it again. So with that said, if you're going to go the route of satin paint personally I'd search out a painter with some experience with it or it may turn out looking like a cheapo driveway job. Just my 2 cents.

i've heard that going flat black is harder to get right then keeping it gloss black.

will need a very experienced painter to get it right!

I saw a really interesting golf I think a few years ago. They guy must have had the car painted gold or bronze, and then coated with a flat black. You only saw the black, but it had a glimmer of something else under. I know it sounds cheezy, but it looked really good.

I love the flat black look, but I didn't realize that the painting is that much trickier.

If your attempt is to get your car painted for less then traditional paint, then do it yourself with a roller :). Honestly, its going to be expensive.

It is never a good idea to cheap out on paint (whether satin or not). If you want to save money, better to buy a HVLP gun and do it yourself.

I drove around for 3 months in a flat-black, spray-bomb primer VW '65 Beetle when I was 17. Having just rebuilt the engine to an 1835 with dual carbs, I was learning to weld and do body work by repairing the holes but needed to keep the car on the road to get to work/school. After doing the fenders, rockers, the edges of the pan and the window frames I decided I might as well paint the whole car with primer as it looked too much like a dairy cow with the original white base. From the minute I painted it flat black, it was a police-magnet and I must have been stopped a dozen times before I put the finished coat of paint on it. It may have also had something to do with the rusty, drilled-out pea-shooter exhaust I was running :D
