Flashing E-Brake light

Hey guys,
Got a 2001 tdi Jetta.. I'm noticing now that as soon as I turn my key I get 3 very loud beeps like warnings and the E-Brake light begins to flash consistenly.
I'm just wondering what this could be..
I don't see any leaks in the braking system, my fluid level is still full.
Any help would be great!

Is the brake handle completely released?

Yeah handbrake not engaged at all, sometimes it won't start flashing until I'm driving for about 5 minutes. All the bulbs are good except licence plate ones but that's another problem for another time I think lol

I’ve been having a similar issue, checked the fluid and topped it up, DRLs turn on and off when handbrake is applied. Can’t seem to figure out where to go next besides a flush and service.

A red flashing brake symbol on its own means either low on brake fluid. Or the abs has failed in a way that the rears are not under abs control.
Will be combined with solid or flashing abs yellow light if this is the case

A failed rear sensor /cable probems , modjule problems or power to them lost


Vw considers abs mandatory on the rear mk 4 because of the rear brake bias abs releases the rear a bit on pre lockup to allow the fronts to work more on hard stops.

On my car I got it yesterday as my hand brake cable froze up and locked the rear wheels. Of course it was snowing like crazy so I just drove home with the rear ties as skis. Got in the garage and stopped quickly as the tires had traction. Cut off the hand brake cable and all is well. Oh no handbrake...

Yeah I do have an abs light on.

I know my right rear wheel speed sensor is bad so I'll try changing that and see if it works!

As requested above, have you scanned for codes?
I'd bet it finds problems.

Yeah I've scanned and the only code is for the right rear wheel speed sensor.

I had this issue, problem is rear ABS sensor or ring .
I replaced the sensor and no more flashing light or beeps, and ABS light on cluster resets.

Check the plug and connections on the fuse block on top of the battery.

just had this problem last week, replaced my broken rear left abs/speed sensor and the flashing light and beep went away
