FIS cluster(Immo III) in an Immo II car, miles to empty upgrade

First, thanks to Chris(Nihiliator) for performing the modification on my cluster. Thanks also to ELE28 who provided the updated software.

My Immo3 cluster had an older version of software/firmware and enabling the miles to empty was not working.

With the new firmware update, everything works perfectly!

thanks again,

Lito

I want you, I need you, Oh baby, oh baby.

Now how can I get this for my cluster!?!
Except I have an Immobo 2 cluster to begin with...

Greg will correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that NO IMMO-II cluster has distance-to-empty. You *can* install an IMMO-III cluster in your car that, depending on the model and software version, can have distance-to-empty enabled.

Lito has an IMMO-III FIS cluster. His cluster's previous software version did not support distance-to-empty, but the version that Greg provided for him does. Now Lito is unusually happy.

Like Chris said, you'll need an Immo3 cluster. Since your navi is aftermarket, I wouldn't spend the money just to get MTE.

What part # is the immo3 cluster with mph? the thread from 2001 lists european cluster 1J5 920 926CX $375.00

If I buy a used jetta cluster on ebay, from a gasser, do I just need to look for a 2002+ to get the Miles To Empty?

My dealership quoted me $100 for a cluster intall with the sensors, if I provide the part. Will the 2002+ cluster or the new cluster # listed above provide MTE without any firmware updates?

"1999 and 2001 with the code 1J0 920 (Immobilser II) work on a 1999 Golf with a 1J0 919 cluster with (Immobiliser II) without problems.

The problem is that the 1J0 920 cluster uses the CAN gateway (build into the cluster) to communicate with the airbag and abs modules. There is away to recode the 1J0 920 cluster to ignore the airbag and abs controllers.

Thats my understanding

From what my understanding is the ABS canbus is the same the airbag canbus is different.

Any ideas on how to do what you mentioned?

ISit possible to update the software for the FIS display so the info is displayed like later FIS clusters like radio data/warning lights.seperator. then MFA 1/2 seperator then air temp?

No Immo2 cluster had this function (not even Passat in EU), when byte for miles to empty is changed in immo 2 cluster, the speedo is reading slower 5 MPH so changing anything in that cluster will only affect speedo reading:eek:

In either case, both of you will need to be able to re-code and re-install your cluster once you get it back. You'll have to re-code the ECU to the car and you'll have to re-code you keys.
Not necessarily. Lito, your case was odd in that the software in your cluster was older, so it needed to be replaced completely and you needed to adapt your cluster and keys from scratch. Other people who want this mod may only need to have their current software altered, not replaced. If it only needs to be altered, they can retain their current cluster coding, mileage, key IDs, and IMMO information (IMMO-ID, SKC, VIN).

Right, I was just lucky you could do the upgrade in firmware for me! If you are replacing the cluster, then all above applies. If you're updating the cluster than it just needs to find it's way to Chris.

Of course you will need to install your old cluster or not drive the car for a couple of days.

Adapting the cluster is not a problem, been there done that. :)

Now what do I need to this myself, vagdashcom and a serial or usb cable? Where do I get the ROM to flash with zero miles

I want to do it myself since it is very hard for me to send the cluster to the USA.

I just had nihilator ( Chris )stop by to turn on miles till empty fuction, hooked into the data port, we talked about vws, then he pulled his cable out of the port in about 2 minutes and we were done. A new toy to play with, hummmm road trip to the Ohio Renn Faire this weekend to fill up the tank and do some " testing ":D ? Thanks again Chris.

We both were to have the MTE activated - as it turned out my car was done first. Lito was all smiles at that point and said ''I'm Next!" - after about a hour of frustration he still did not have MTE. Needless to say he was NOT all smiles then! On the way back we stopped for a pop and he told me "I hope you're enjoying it!" meaning my MTE - and yes, I was smiling! :)

Lito - glad to see you finally got MTE four months and two weeks after I did - congratulations!

I tested my MTE after it was enabled - when it said I had 30 miles left to go I filled up with 869 miles on that tank. Took 16.162 gallons so I think the MTE is fairly accurate but the MTE number it gives you depends on your driving conditions at that time. If I'm on the highway the MTE value will be higher than if I was driving in town for example.

Yeah, that's correct. When I fill up, the distance-to-empty screen will say anything from 420 to 470 miles, depending on the type of driving I've most recently been doing. It will adjust itself as I get closer to empty, so it doesn't end up being off by the time I get to the end of the tank.

My light will come on when distance-to-empty says 25 miles. That's not wholly accurate, because I usually have about 50 miles before I'm at what *I* call empty.

Just wondering, how did you guys get the SKC and such to do the cluster swap?

The dealer wants big money to do the swap for me... I have my own vag and such, but not clue how to get the code..

It takes some special tools to get the SKC code. A handful of people on the board(a few in this thread) have the tools to do it.

Nihlator, I am guessing its impossible, but could immobo3 software be flashed onto an immobo 2 cluster?

Correct; that is impossible.
