Thought I would share my first Fill up....

I filled up the gas tank (to the Rim) and had 580 miles on the clock. I drive highway miles from home to work 70 miles day and did some city driving as well. I would say 75% HW and 25% City. Within the last 3 days, I have been using the guidlines that DRIVBIWIRE has on this Forum. Using S/M Mode in City and D on highway. On HW keeping the RPM at 2200-2400 65-80. City.... shifting 3000 RPM and once day take here her up to 3800 RPM.

14.7 Gallons

I thought the Tank was 14??? I hope I can get better than this, I'm looking for 45MPG Average.....

Can't wait till after 1000miles to take her up to 5100RPM.

45mpg on an entire tank will be a stretch I do believe, especially with the DSG, but good luck

I filled up the gas tank

That is your problem. You don't have a gas tank. ….

It is a good idea to do at least three tank fills before trusting the result. If all three match close, you should be able to trust those numbers. If they vary, then I suggest that you may just need to remember that there are variables and they can vary a fair amount. However after averaging three or more tanks full, you should have close numbers.

You will likely gain some as you drive it as the engine brakes in (assuming you got the car new.).

Good Luck

I got 42.25 on my last tank and my car is nowhere near broken in. I don't see 45 mpgs as a stretch once it's broken in and if I drive for FE the whole tank.

I think it's 32/40. Can't remember for sure. I agree though, things seem to be headed in the wrong direction. My step grandfather had a early 90s geo metro. Got great fuel mileage, but didn't have a/c and topped out around 60 or 65.

I've got 640-ish miles on my Jetta so far. But I have a long commute of 172 miles round trip. Tonight I took it easy on the Jetta as I was kind-of tired and on my commute home, I got an indicated 47.8 mpg at 64 mph average. Tank average is around 43.6 mpg.

I hope I can sustain this for the whole tank, but this is pretty remarkable mileage! (And yes, I'm using Redline's Diesel Fuel Catalyst as a fuel additive.) My former Altima Hybrid took all sorts of hypermiling techniques to achieve 35-37 mpg. I'm loving this Jetta! :)

keep the speeds slow, don't buy a DSG, 17" rims, keep the tires up around 40-42, and keep the car clean of clutter. I regularly snag 43-47 a tank, and it's just going up now that temps are in the 60's now.

I really don't see why people rag on DSG's so much for fuel economy...I don't have a problem at all!!!

And how does 17" rims help fuel economy??

The 17" rims and tires must have a slightly larger Diameter thus reducing RPM in top gear. The fuel economy is said to be equal between the manual and the DSG on the VW.CA website. What I like about the DSG is it shifts like lightning. Here is a detailed version from the vw site.

DSG – A definite shift for the better. DSG stands for Direct Shift
Gearbox. In essence, it gives you the convenience of an automatic with
the performance and efficiency of a manual. Here’s how it works. DSG is
managed by dual electronically controlled clutches, so not only do you
shift faster, you also get enhanced acceleration and reduced fuel
consumption. In fact, thanks to DSG, each shift takes less than 4/100ths
of a second

Not trying to be snarky here but what are you complaining about?

These cars need a 10-15 thousand miles on em b4 they start cranking out consistent 40+ tanks. You''re likely still getting winter fuel too.

-pretty typical, and in fact quite good for a first tank, especially if it wasn't all highway. The EPA figures are 30/42, and I find them to be reasonably accurate. Today I completed a 600 mile round trip and averaged 43MPG (calculated at the pump). On the return trip I averaged 48MPG (MFI indicated), but I drove speed limit or a tad less the whole way.

EDIT - I want to add that with the DSG, I've never exceeded about 4500rpm. The gearbox doesn't seem to allow it... Although, I don't give it WOT throttle in S-mode all that often.

In Drive, no, but in Sport the transmission will often shift at 5000RPMS when going into 5th or 6th.

I absoultely love the transmission and would not want anything else. I just wish it didnt have that funky jerk at low speeds--i just drop it in Sport for smooth sailing.

Can't wait to get past the break-in period! :D

If you're not past the break-in period, how do you know it shifts at 5000 going into 5th? Also, you're going pretty quick if you're at 5000rpm going into 5th or 6th. :p

i'm envious of all of you w/DSG out there showing > 40mpg. My best fill up has been 35mpg. Almost at 5000 mi and following the break-in suggestions here. No city driving. All farm and highway roads. One thing i've always been concerned about around here is fuel quality. It varies so much between the stations and states (i live / work across a stateline). I'm going to start looking at the additives i've read about here and see if things get better.

My worst fillup was 35 mpgs. Every one since then has been 39+ I drive 40 miles one way and don't deal with much/any traffic to speak of. I do still follow the break-in procedures for accellerating too. I know you said no city driving, but do you deal with traffic at all?

I just don't see why you're getting such low mpg's....I've been getting over 40 a tank consistently since day 1. Even easier now that it's broken in.

now you've got me thinking.

i'm 9 stop-signs to work. No lights. 15 miles of farm roads and 15 miles on interstate. No traffic. ever.

my car is empty. no junk. i weigh 200lbs. i put a panzer plate on, but surely that can't make up for a 5-7mpg difference between your cars and mine. now i will be scouring the forums for other tips, but i doubt anything i do will make up the difference.

Just purchased a 2011! Traded in my 2005 with 214K miles. I was getting 48. First fill-up on the 2011 was around 40. Getting much better now that I'm driving like an old lady! Oh and I drive 150 miles per day, all highway.

truly jealous of that^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I have a DSG and my best 1/2 tank so far was 385 miles. I do speed quite a bit so I know if I slowed down, I could easily make 400+! I use Shell with no additives to date. My average is below, with tanks as low as 39MPG and as high as 48 MPG.

But Savageman69, 455 Miles on a half tank is amazing! Which Diesel are you using, any additives?

Those stop signs could do it, takes a lot of energy to get moving back up to (guessing) 50MPH for the farm roads. I do mostly city driving and am about 35 - better than what EPA rated the 2011 Jetta sedan TDI so I'm happy about that.

Also guessing that you have a DSG - if you have a manual though, are you leaving it in gear to coast the the stop sign or shifting to neutral and idling the engine as you coast? (If you have the DSG this question does not apply.)

Honestly it was the cheapest diesel i could find lol..I do believe its esso and no additives. Like i said this tank i havent not sped we were maintaining a 130km/hr at least on the 2 hour drive home from getting his tdi. I was in no way babying it lol. I think my next tank im gonna try some fuel saving driving and see what she can do

I am glad you are saving money on your fuel bill by driving more and more. See that the money saved is kept separately for future repair costs.
