Hello! I am placing an order for a Golf-TDI automatic highline in blue graphite pearl at my local dealership at the end of this week. I will be able to pick up my new car in mid-January! I can't wait! I had a few questions I was hoping you guys could help me with!

I am under the impression that the golf highline comes with bluetooth connectivity. But after reading some threads on this forum, I'm not so sure! Is it really false advertising? This is my first car, I've never driven a VW automatic (the dealership didn't have golf automatics that I could test drive.) Do they drive just like any other automatic? Since this is a brand new car, I shouldn't really have to worry about spending money on maintenance issues etc just yet? right? Are VW Golf's pretty reliable? How do they drive in the winter (I live in Northern BC.) Since this is a 2010 model, I was told by the dealership that there is no diesel-climate incentive for new models! It that really the case? Any other advice you guys could provide me with would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi TDI2010,
I just put a deposit on a TDI wagon due here in a few weeks. Hoped to get one with bluetooth - but apparently they're coming later in the model year for Canada. Since the BT option is pretty basic (ie. basically a speaker phone with zero integration into the multimedia unit), I passed on waiting for it. My iPhone dials on voice command, and the speakerphone in the iPhone is pretty loud (and I rarely make/take calls while driving unless I'm on call and it's an emergency). There are decent aftermarket options that clip to your visor, etc, but downsides are temptation to theives and need to be recharged periodically. For longer road trips I use a Garmin GPS with BT that does load my address book. So bottom line, I would have taken the VW option, but not too chuffed about not getting it.

The DSG (not really an automatic in the old tiptronic sense) was pretty good. I drive a six-gear manual sports car for summer fun, but for daily driving and winter use I decided on the DSG.

I'm betting on reliability - up to a point (it's a machine, after all). What I'm counting on is decent service when that time comes. My 2007 X3 is coming off lease and it has suffered both reliability and service issues. Won't start below minus 20 Celsius!

There are many VW's on the road here in northern Alberta, so they must be pretty good to drive and own?

Thanks for the replies! I would ask the sales guy but I don't want him to think that I am completely uneducated about cars. I don't want to give him an opportunity to drive up the price or anything! I'll probably be paying the MSRP and I really don't want to pay more than that! I feel like he is already treating me differently because I am a woman.

Matt: The sales manager had already ordered a gray highline TDI but I told him I wanted a blue one. All he did was trade the gray car with another dealership that had placed an order for a blue one! It wasn't a big deal because the car hadn't been pre-sold.

Ok, you're a lucky guy then ! ;)
I ordered mine with the manual gearbox so that's why I won't get it faster.
Dealers don't usualy preorder the Highlines with the manual...

By the way, bluetooth is standard in the Golf TDI. It's the Golf Wagon that doesn't get it in Canada...

Congrats on the new car :D

The DSG (Dual Shift Gearbox) automatic is unlike other automatics in that it is actually 2 gearboxes (transmissions) in one and is controlled by a computer which shifts between gears on the gear boxes (one box has 1, 3, 5, Reverse while the other box has 2, 4, 6) and it shifts in milliseconds so performance is great. If one uses the SPORT mode the DSG shifts more aggresively.

You'll love the car. If you're living in an area that gets tons of snow then you might want to invest in snow tires and a cheap set of wheels. The snow tires will give you great traction in snow and ice and make your driving safer. If you'd like some snow tire suggestion simply ask.

Happy Motoring!

Well, I called my local dealership to see if there were any updates on the VW golf I had a put a deposit on. The manager told me that I will not have the car until March now! I'm so pissed off! When I placed the order in mid November he told me I would be able to pick up the car early January. I can't believe he lied to me, just so I would put a deposit down! I don't know if I can wait until March! I need a car for work etc. Any advice as to how I should approach this now!

Thanks

Most people got the Direct Shift Gearbox.....you are one lucky dude to have picked up the elusive Dual Shift Gearbox!

I think those are Euro-spec only! ;)

Go get your deposit back and buy a Toyota if you need a car very soon.

Wow, those are some looong delivery times in Canada. I thought mine took long, ordering in Mid November and it was delivered Nov 28. It's A Golf hatch manual highline. I guess it depends a lot on the color and mainly the dealer. I would think that all dealers would be getting a similar quota, but I learned it's definitely not the case.

If I had to wait till March, it's safe to say I'd have to buy a different car ....

If you got a lead time of only a week or two, this means your car was already in Canada. My car's a special order and will be built to my specs, so it's quite longer...

Actually it was not at the time I signed my deal. The car hit the port 2 weeks after I signed. If it has not, I was looking at March probably as well, but at that point my deal would be terminated.

Well, my sales guy just called me to say that my car will be here in february instead of late-march like it was supposed to.

I'm happy the wait will be shortened but at the same time this puts me in a difficult position since I need to sell my 1.8T and the timing will be bad in february. I'll also need to buy new winter tires right away because of the law here... (winter tires mandatory from dec. 15th to march 15th)
