My wife and I took a long weekend to celebrate our 25th Anniversary,

and along the way I took advantage of the situation ;) with a 600+ tank.

"Will we need fuel soon dear?

Nah we can make the next one :D.

If you drive mainly on the highway and keep your speed reasonable, there is no magic to getting 600+ miles to a tank.

Yes, very possible. i've hit 676 miles on a tank and that was 60-70% highway, with very heavy traffic at times during my commute (46.9MPG for the tank). A different tank I got 48.1MPG for the tank but didn't stretch it as far. On a full highway tank 700 shouldn't be difficult.

I hit the 700 mile club back this summer with a trip from CT to SC

I think a 700 mile tank would pretty easy if you can stay on the highway.
I got back from the trip with a bit over 400 miles on the trip meter and a 46+ mpg on the dash.
I drove my normal work related mix for a couple days which dropped the avg down some, 601 miles on 14.03 gal, 42.8 mpg not bad.
Thanks for the kind words, She's put up me for a long time ;>).

The 700 plus tank was all highway. Although running the a/c and averaging about 70-72 with 3 adults and luggage it's no small task

I got my first 600 mile tank last night. Just regular combined 70% highway/30% city driving. The secret? Just stay below 70mph and when accelerating take it easy.

Our car, a 2011 JSW 6-speed with 13K miles.

We just did a 1650+ mile round-trip from Boylston MA to Hudsonville MI. On the last tankful, we used 14.7 gallons to drive 735 miles, which makes for exactly 50 mpg. The tank before that was about 49, the one before that was about 48.

We kept the speeds at 65, occasional hard acceleration, using cruise control most of the way. Air conditioning on the trip out to MI, but rarely on the way back.

Keep in mind that the only major hills on this trip are in the Berkshires in western MA. That's reflected in the mpg records --the last fillup (50mpg) was in western NY before we crossed the border into MA.

The MFI was moderately accurate, reading within 1 mpg below actual mileage in some cases, and 1 mpg above in others.

This is the first long trip we've taken in this car. It's mostly used for driving around the Worcester MA area with lots of hills and stop & go suburbia traffic. Lifetime mileage is just about 42-43 mpg.

Having had three MKIVs before this one, it's clear that the JSW isn't the mileage champ that the our older vehicles were, but pretty close. We could drive a MKIV at over 70 mph and get 50 mpg on the highway. Have to keep it at 65 or less with this car.

Paul.

i did a 320 round trip up to Newry ME over the weekend, I went up 95 to rt 26, I came back to southern NH via cutting across northern NH on RT2 then down 93 (through Franconia Notch). The MFD gave 47MPG on the way up and 53MPG on the way back. Speed was a little faster on the way up but still very happy with probably only using just over 6 gallons or so.

Yay 28 mpg with half city driving
You're fine don't worry. You will always see someone come in and brag about getting 99mpg with ac on and with a roof rack.

fact is if you check fuelly... the golf diesels are at about 39mpg average, and thats a mix of DSG/Manual and broken in cars. If you have a DSG and are within the first 5k expect to be at the low 30s at best.

Yep check my Fuelly acct, 38.6 or so actual, and it has gotten better as I get more miles on...but on the highway at a bit over legal speeds mid to upper 40's is very possible and the longer you can stay in 6th without a lot of shifting around the better it gets. My best is over 44 on a trip but I got home and fueled up so it was mostly highway miles. I'm headed to Madison in a couple weeks for a day trip 500 miles or so, I'll let you know what it get's.

HeHe, I'm pretty sure that if the GTi is as much fun to drive as a TDi but faster I'd need an Sr22 filing ;>). I never drove a GTi but I haven't missed the acceleration of my Maxima (or the drone of the CVT)

I appreciate the sentiment, but I don't have a DSG, but a manual, and got 26 mpg my most recent tank, which is quite a bit less than low 30s!:(

I'm in the 600 club now, too. I got a 608.5 mile, 45.1 mpg tank. The mileage on my car has been right around the EPA estimates from day one(or maybe slightly better).

Best I've ever gotten was 760 miles on a single tank, and I have yet to do that again. My cumulative average economy is about 39 mpg.

We have a trip planned to Yellowstone in June, may attempt to reach that 700 mile mark again...

Wow that's terrible but maybe winter fuel contributed to that and city driving. Thankfully I've never had one that low.
I had a 26.9mpg tank last week. DSG + mostly city (and what wasn't city was, ahem, spirited) + car not broken in yet. On target to beat 40mpg on this tank though (almost all highway).

Eh, my "crap" DSG gets 53mpg steady state at 60. Take your elitism and kindly shove it up your ass.
