I've been getting 800 mile tanks for a while now, but thought I'd at least post in this thread to keep up on the news with the rest of the TDIer's in my fuel range.

822 Miles.
15.9 US Gallons.
51.7 MPG
ULSD fuel w/ 250ml of PS Diesel Kleen every fill-up.
2003 VW Golf w/ 5spd Trans.
Car is bone stock...ventectomy is the only mod;).
180k Miles on the Odometer.

This tank was about 60/40 City/Hwy driving, with no hypermiling used, but I do drive slow, with the cruise set usually around 60-62 MPH on the hwy.

I did have an alignment done about half way through this tank, and I'm putting new tires on later this week, so I'm hoping to bump up to the 53 MPG range throughout the summer months....maybe more if I can get a long enough hwy trip to burn up a whole tank.

Fuel light came on at 773 and the odometer is at 806, so I could make it back home easily, but I buy fuel at this end of the commute for a bit less. No great mileage really, (will find out when I fuel it tonite) but the interesting thing is that I last bought fuel on January 20th 2014. Right in the middle of a cold spell and the middle of "winterized" fuel up here.
Just throwing it out there to show its not the "winterized" fuel that acounts for the mileage drop as much as just the cold temps making everything resistant to turning/moving.

Post fill up:
807 miles/15.01 gal to the rim.
53.76 MPG

My fuel light came on at 787 miles this afternoon...bugger, I would have gotten to 800 but I got stuck on a hill behind a school bus...lol. I'll be filling up around 820 miles, and will be between 15.5-16 gallons.

I was hoping for better mileage on this tank, but I ended up doing a lot of city driving/short trips for the whole second half of this tank.

I'm trying to keep it all documented so that I can see what any changes I make do...if any at all. As it stands, I'm usually in the 51 MPG range, and would likely hit 53 MPG without any trouble if I did some steady hwy driving. That part is largely dictated by work...so my long hauls are not a regularly scheduled thing.

Still, I think if it wasn't for all the hills around here, this car would do 55 MPG all day long on flat ground.

All in all, still fantastic mileage for an old 03 Golf. I love this car.

That with a lazy thermostat coolant temp doesn't get above 170
Have a wonky ECT sensor
Using cruise control 90% of the time
Using a/c at least 70% of the time
Tire pressures at 32 or so

So some room to improve after I take care of the thermostat and raise the tire pressures

Hit my second 800 mile tank, on my road trip from michigan to florida.

876 miles from 48146 to 31092
14.94 gal
58.6 mpg

I tried milking the last 100 miles left on the dash to get 900 but it wasnt gonna happen. I didnt even expect 800 to begin with. I think itd have been no problem for 900 on this particular trip if I had actually tried. Maybe on the way home.

It's been a while, but saw 800 this morning:

First 150 miles were commuting, etc., the rest was a run to NJ yesterday to Waterfest. I wasn't trying for economy, cruising mostly at 80 when we weren't in traffic. A/C on all day.

Added 16.3 gallons, 49.1 MPG. I've got about 15K on the new engine, I think it's breaking in. It sounded a bit different yesterday, makes me wonder if compression has come up a bit.

Nice to see 800 again. I'd probably do better if I slowed down a bit. :)

.....are we able to jam almost 16 gallons into a 14.5 gallon Gen VI JSW TDI fuel tank?

impressive (but let's be careful out there)

Anyone done this with, or less than, the published 14.5 gallons?

I'm not going to try for it*, but I've run 120 miles off current tank (wife's car) and am registering (via UG, which was dead-on last fuel-up) 55.1mpg, which works out to 799 miles.

* Mr. Murphy is always hanging around! Heck, I'd never run out of fuel in my tractor until the other day, and that was after it was already parked! Must have run it so low that when parked, at a bit of an angle, it was essentially out of fuel. Just happened to have the magic Metalnerd injector wrench to rectify that situation! (when I'd bought it I wasn't exactly figuring I'd be using it on my tractor!)

Once you get the gasket correctly seated on the filler neck, you can pressurize it to about 34psig and it'll hold even more.... ok, not serious

I've never gotten 15 in there before, just a hair under a few times. I always fill right up to where I can see the fuel.

I'm getting excited! Just filled up the Beetle last night at 772 miles and barely squeezed 14.5 gallons in (liquid dribbling out filler neck). Makes me think if I get a big enough pair and run it on "E" for a while I might get 800 miles out of a CR Beetle.

Somethings I wonder if it's all worth the effort. But to do it once so you can say you did it would be priceless.

Check with Deejaaa...I believe he's got his tank vented, and I think he said he gets upset if he gets lower than 59 MPG...lol.

I've been on the road for two days, and I just filled up this afternoon. A little over 800 miles, but closer to 16 gallons...not 14.5 unfortunately.

Seems my new DLC injectors have made my car harder on fuel...lol. I'd be that one guy that gets opposite results from everyone else...lol.

I owe you a message UhOh...I'll be in touch shortly;).

Rem, yeah, PM me. I'm hovering around 53mpg with the wife's car: lots of off-highway driving- ugh! This is with ONLY the DLC520s (and no adjustments): waiting for tune.

It's not an 800 (really not trying :p ) but I thought the 50.00 mpg -- even to 2 decimal places -- was noteworthy :)

Yes, it's been done, but for most people it's often over the 14. 5 gallons listed capacity, which is less than the actual capacity.

FYI, the Mk6 from near empty to filled to the brim is more like 15.2 gallons. If you slosh the fuel around you can work out some of the air and get in about another gallon.

Some in here have run 800 miles tanks, at least 2 have run 900 miles tanks, and one has run a 1,000 mile tank. <Link>

If you like there is also a mod by which you can permanently increase your tank capacity. <Mod>

Still wanted to get it installed on mine, but so much to do, so little time....

Hey Jake, long time! Funny, I just filled my wagon today, 777.4 miles. 15.45 gallons, 50 MPG even. Reserve light had just come on so I could have easly made 800, but it was a good time to fill it up. And who says A/C hurts economy? I think it was on for the entire tank.

Just ventectomy'd both my cars. Now I've got an easier shot of signing up to this club!

Geez, 200 miles and I'm now on the 7/8 mark!

Well, after more than ten years of driving my ’03 wagon, I finally joined the elusive 800 mile club.

Here’s how I did it…

This weekend, I drove from Sacramento, Ca to Portland, OR and back (1,225 mile round trip) on I-5. I drove up to be part of Cascade German Parts (Bora Parts) Summer GTG (http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=444157).

After filling up in Sacramento, I drove the 600 + miles to the Portland area at about 60 mph with cruise control engaged about 90% of the time. I had my a/c on about 50% of the time.

The next day, on the trip back from Portland to Sacramento, I did pretty much the exact same thing (60 mph on cruise control 90% of time driving, a/c on 50% of time driving).

Once I past 800 miles on the odometer, I looked to fill up at the next gas/diesel station along my route.

I took this picture as I pulled up to the pump:

Since my low fuel light had not turned on yet, I was thinking I might have a chance at 900 miles on this tank. But I decided to fill up and call it good.

Here’s the official stats:

Miles: 816.3
Gallons: 12.931
MPG: 63.13
Fuel Price: 2.65
Model Year: 2003
Model: Jetta GLS TDI Wagon
Engine: ALH
Tranny: 02J 5-speed manual
Fuel Type: Diesel #2

I’ve never performed a ventectomy, so filling up usually takes about 12-14 gallons depending on how "empty" the tank is.

Driving slow on open roads and freeways as cars, trucks, and semi’s fly by was a bit hard to take at first. But after a few hours of steady driving at 60mph on the I-5 freeway, I got use to the “slow” speed and rather liked it…Relaxing in a weird way.

All in all, I’m glad I did it. Love me my ALH wagon…:D

2001 (Silver One) 806 miles to the fuel warning light. Been averaging around 55 mpg the last couple tanks.
Sooo, I could try for a 900 mile tank since its been a while, but will probably fuel it tonite after the work commute. Even did a couple short trailer tows on this tank and lots of headwinds, so it could have been a bit better.

Edit:
Vented, filled to the neck rim.
Actual fuel-up info. 852.8 miles/15.358 gal=55.528mpg
ScanGauge said 855 miles/15.7 gal=54.7mpg so it was close, probably the towing messed with it.
No hypermiling techniques, just driving.

Not that it's difficult with the old ALH cars, but I just filled up tonight while on a trip, and did 811 miles on 15.5 gallons. That's 52.3 MPG I guess.

That was 100% highway, with only one cold start (car sat overnight on the ferry I was on, so it was cold this morning). Cruise set at 63 MPH all day long as per my Garmin.

What's interesting is...this was my first run with my ECU tuned. Now, I have gotten 52MPG lots of times previously, but I should note that I was sluggin' away up and down hills for hundreds of miles today, with pretty strong cross winds. I think 53 or 54 will be not too big a deal.

I think that will be the best this old girl will do with the hills and rough roads we have around here. I have to do a run to Boston and back in a couple weeks...that's where I usually get my best MPG...I95 is nice and level there for a while. It helps;).

Rem

PS: In case I haven't said it lately...I love this car!!
