I don't think you really have 50 hp over my Jettas, plus the extra weight in the newer models need a bit more power to drag them around.
I don't see many non-MkIV cars (Passats excluded) making 55 mpg/900 mile tanks.
It's sort of fun seeing how many miles you can drag out of a "good" tank.
I would certainly agree with the 900 tank, but I believe 55mpg is within reach of a lot of Mk6 drivers...under the right conditions.

1) High ratio of highway
2) minimal stop and go
3) keep speed at posted or 65mph (whichever is lower)
4) be smooth and easy in your driving
5) look ahead and work to avoid having to brake unnecessarily
6) moderate temperatures
7) No rain
8) No AC, minimal window ventilation

Certainly within reach under those conditions; I just don't need to meet as many of those requirements to be able to pull 900+ miles/tank (or 55 mpg).
I didn't imply it wasn't possible, just that you don't hear of it often.
Carry on.

Those are pretty much my driving conditions (except my top is 60 not 65). And I have a 3-cyl PD engine rather than a Mk6.

But yeah, a lot of people seem to see the 'top scores' in the monthly competition & don't understand why they can't reach that figure with their 3 mile city commute LOL.

200lbs more i highly doubt that will take away the 50hp difference.

No, they actually do have 50 HP (and 81LB of torque) more than your Jetta. The extra power and torque easily overcomes the extra weight making the newer cars a lot more fun to drive.

"I don't see many non-MkIV cars (Passats excluded) making 55 mpg/900 mile tanks."

It's already happening. A few MKV6 drivers (GaryTDI, scoutx, pressenter, etc) are reporting 55+ MPG with their heavier, more powerful cars.

Perhaps if my cars were still stock, which they are not. Even so, I certainly don't doubt the MkVI's are quicker than their predecessors. I do know that I don't want one (MkVI)either way.
As you say, "a few" MkVI's are making it, but just not many, as I said. The more the better, I think it's great some are making decent mileage, wish they all did/could.

Current tank in the '03 is at 524 miles at the half mark despite a fair amout of A/C use as of late. Should be an easy 900 mile tank if the fuel stop works out on the right end of the commute.

For me, "decent" mileage is what I'm getting now; 36-40 MPG with my comparatively heavy JSW. I'm convinced the few that are getting 800+ mile tanks with their MKV6's are hardcore hypermilers. I'm not going to go into a debate about extreme hypermiling, but suffering inside a 120 degree car with the A/C turned off and windows rolled up for the sake of high MPG is a choice I'm not willing to make.

I've got an appointment to tune my car on Thursday. Going with the stage 2 / dpf delete (no emissions testing where I live). It's supposed to put 295 LB of torque to the wheels, and 10% extra MPG. We'll see.

Good luck with the tune. I'd be very curious how that helps your fuel economy. As for 120 degree temps in the car I doubt even I would be able to handle that without passing out but I guess it isn't a sin to exaggerate a little :p

I wouldn't go to those extremes as far as 40C+ in the car. But it my case by the time it starts getting cool and comfortable in the car, I'm pulling into my driveway. The current job is just so close and we have no shade at work or home so it bakes pretty bad all day. There is more benefit from just having the windows down for part of the drive.

Funny, all these people talking of "gasp" EGR and DPF deletes, and I'm the crazy bastard researching how to retrofit one to my PD. I must be the nutty one.

Note: I said getting 55mpg...I didn't say 800 mile tanks.

I think most mk6 drivers can hit 55mpg under the conditions above...doing so for an entire tank to hit 800 miles....that's a bit more of a challenge.

For example, I've had occasional solitary runs of 59-60mpg...holding it together day after day for 900 miles. Well, that currently eludes me.

Finally got my first 800 tank after owning my golf for 6 months. I was on my way back from Texas to NJ and made it from Mississippi to PA

Filled up today because I was not sure I would have made the 40 mile commute to work tomorrow w/o running out. Here are the numbers, mostly all work commuting including A/C use more than a few times.
886.6 miles/16.201 gal.
54.725 mpg tank.
Very close to the goal, just a bit short.
If the slightly oversize tires are factored in (GPS shows odometer is 2% under recording the actual miles) it went aprox 903 miles. Close enough either way.

Hmmm.. First DSG Mk6 I think I've seen in the 800 mile club.

First or not, congrats. Very nice run.

So I'm new to the TDI club, yet very excited. I've had the car for less than a week now and have put at least 600 miles on it. I travel approx. 60 miles each way to work. I'm struggling to hit 45 mpg. Is it the up and down hills of PA? Are people getting better gas mileage in the plains? I've been setting the cruise at 65 in a 65 mph zone. Am I better not using the cruise so the car can roll a little better? 2009 Jetta TDI with 202,000 miles on it. Did I mention I love the car anyhow :)

THANKS!!!

I think for the conditions/terrain and the vehicle model that's pretty respectable mileage. You may/should be able to do better w/o cruise in the hills. Try to gain a little speed going down and drop off a little going up. I only use c/c on the level, which isn't too often.
An '09, in my opinion, won't match the fuel mileage of the pre-04 models.
Enjoy the ride!

thanks for the input. I'm actually having the timing belt kit done and the trans flushed. I bought the car with 200,000 miles and under the impression none of this was done, so I'm hoping it helps boost it along a little bit. Don't get me wrong, gas mileage is great, but I was hoping to hit the all might 50 mpg at least once ;)

50mpg is more then possible in a cr.....some dont want to let go of the alh...I loved mine when i had it but the cr is faster, and way more fun to drive and capable of great mpg.

In fact this little cr will be going for 60mpg and 900 mile tank very soon

sorry...help me out here...what is a cr? Does it matter that mine is an auto compared to a stick. I hear the auto's actually do better in gas mileage due to being 6 speed. is this true?

CR/common rail. The current fuel injection system in use on new(er) TDIs.
I don't think an auto will get better than a properly driven manual. Doesn't matter so much how many gears, more the final drive ratio and how effecient it tranfers power from the engine.

900 miles with your Jetta = 14.5 gallons of fuel @ 62.06 MPG. Not sure that's ever been done with a newer 2.0 CR Jetta. I suppose you could drive the car on a track, and set the cruise at 40 MPH for 22.5 hours.
