Fuel light came on at 828 miles so I took the long way home and elected not to fill up (currently at 886 miles) until tomorrow and try to get 900 tank. It's been a while since things worked out for one of those.

Edit for fill up numbers: had to take the long way into town to rack up the final miles to break into the 900s.
902.3 miles/15.809 gal=57.075 mpg tank. Aside from the normal work commute I had a couple of 100 mile trips to stain and paint at the rental property. And the winds have been a bit less as of lately.
Sort of lame, but could have made more miles but my wife was along and finds no humor in running out of fuel. I think I've run every vehicle we've owned out at one time or another except the TDIs, which on one hand I like to stretch it a bit, but they would be a pain to get started after running dry.

Thanks. Updated with the fuel up final numbers.
Whoa! 903 miles and 57+ mpg!

I can't seem to find a stretch in which I can actually run a full tank that doesn't end up with some sort of road-block (traffic jam or something that forces me to end up doing a bunch of running around in in-town traffic!). And that's to just get in the 800 mile club!

I now slink off with my feelings of impotency... (but salute you in your amazing accomplishment!)

Just so we remember our roots, filled the B4 today. Normal driving, about half suburban streets, half highway, some traffic, 75 MPH when I can, lots of short trips.

18.05 gallons, 50.7 MPG.

I had my best tank yesterday! 831.8 miles and used 15.714 gallons of fuel. I could have gotten to 900, but I didn't want to run the car down that low. 52.93 mpg. I love the new 5th gear, injectors and tune!

Sincerely,

I got sooo close today to hitting 800 miles before the low fuel warning came on...lol.

Darn thing beeped on at 796.5 miles...doh!

However, I pushed my range limit a little tonight and made a run for 850 miles. By the time I pulled up to the pumps, I was at 849.1 miles.

I suppose I could have driven around the block so I could actually hit 850, but I figured I better not push my luck.

Anyway, fill-up was 16.42 gallons, so 51.7 MPG. Not my best MPG, but pretty typical/consistent. This tank was about 70% Highway...did 500+ miles today.
Cruise set at an indicated 67 mph all day, so actual would be 64/65 mph.

I love this car.:D

Just hit 803/15gal on my last tank with room to spare. I made sure to shut the car off at every long light, no a/c and following semi's a little to close at times but I had to get there once.

Cheers.

This car is priceless to me.

Fuel light came on at 810 miles this morning. I think I could stretch it to a 900 miler (it would be very close) but since the preferred fueling places won't support that very well it looks like it will be a bit short.
847.8 miles/15.354 gal=55.216 mpg.
Cooler temps (frost every morning) and 50-60*F highs seem to make for some of the best mileage opportunities, but that doesn't last very long around here. it will soon be cold enough to start making a negative impact on warm up times, rolling resistance, etc.
Love this old car!!
Last few tanks:
833 miles 54.85 mpg
902 miles 57.08
852 miles 55.53
720 miles 55.46

Another One!

Drove to NC this weekend to the AAW GTG in Asheville. Filled the car at home before leaving, realized en route that Waze was telling me my hotel was almost exactly 800 miles from the fill. Didn't think I'd make it on one tank because I was going 80 a lot of the time, and spent 3 hours in traffic in PA. But I did it: 800.4 miles, 15.7 gallons. The low fuel light had just come on. 51 MPG, which is the best tank I've gotten in this car. Guess that new engine is breaking in.

That doesnt count.... anyone can get 800 miles if their tank is big enough!;)
It wasn't easy. My previous best was only about 680 miles, and my Touareg has about 70k miles on it now. I filled up in Canada for this one. Is there some big difference with Canadian diesel?

Tanko did it!

IN!:D

807 miles on 15.049 gallons. Fuel light came on at 764 miles. Gallons (and thus mpgs) are likely not as accurate as I'd like because I filled at at different fueling station than my normal (I didn't want to risk making it there as it was another 12 miles away).

So... as a matter of my normal driving conditions I'm not sure I'll make a concerted effort to do this again (I didn't refrain from laying on the hammer, though I did try to limit myself). If the time is ever there for a long road trip (not something that I do, but it could happen) then I may look to try to beat this mark.

I'll give no effort to threaten the folks in the 900 mile club!:D

Tanka's IN!

Managed to just squeeze it in. 800 miles on the dot (had to drive down the road 4 mi and loop back to the station)! 15.851 gal for 50.5 mpg.

Back in May when I bought the car in Va and towed it home to Ky. First test with fuel topped to the brim using venting, I drove to Louisville and back to Etown (99.0) miles used 1.736 gallons for a short test result of 57.02mpg. I was pretty stoked to say the least.

Not long after, took a trip to Tn and achieved 805.3 miles:

on 14.716 gallons.

I've experienced bad results from running older vehicles to the end of their fuel limits, so I don't push to the fuel light very often these days. I ran an old s10 out of gas in Colorado and it was never the same. I think I could try for the 900 mile tank, but not sure it's worth the risk. Also, those numbers above were achieved on just BP diesel. After reading in here, I now add 8 oz TCW3 ashless 2 stroke oil and 8 oz of silver diesel clean to each tank. Recently did a trip to Tn again and got 53.5 mpg for that tank. I use the same BP station unless I am out of state.

Anybody get into this club with a vnt-17 or s7, or is everybody running a stock turbo?
I am on a stock turbo and the guy's bro I bought my car from did the tuning at his Audi/VW performance shop told me getting a larger turbo to compliment the Malone stage 3 tune would net better MPG. Right now, I have no need to upgrade but I am kinda interested in the power and economy differences.

I have hit 816 and 806 miles as my personal best. I have been averaging 48-52mpg the last couple years as I commute a lot now to the tune of 600-1k miles/wk to Raleigh and next year will be Charlotte. I have a 17/22, 11mm pump, PP502s, and a .658 5th gear. I get my foot into as much as I can, but I also keep my speeds on the highway reasonable by never going over 75mph...saves me fuel and the stress of having to worry about speeding tickets.

So what do you drive? Golf? Jetta? Passat?

After reading all the crazy posts with this 800 miles to a tank man nuts for sure! At 70-75 on highway and in down normal throttle control I can manage 600 on 14.5 gal. I guess I can't complain. I don't have it in for slower driving :D

I have just the intercooler, upper IC pipe, and lower IC pipe changed. Everything else stock. I do wonder if a straight pipe exhaust will help a bit. Anyone have experience with exhaust mod and MPG?

If I slipstream trucks 90% of a tank of gas at 70 mph using a bit of pulse and glide, 10% in town, I can still manage around 760 miles/tank.

Coming home from NC to KY after xmas, I slip streamed trucks for 300 miles and took a different route after that where the speed limit was 55. It was late and I decided to really focus on a soft pedal technique and maintain a gps speed of 59 and dropping to 50 on big hills, using my boost gauge as a guide. I'm now at 733 hoping to make a 850+ tank if I can just stay out of town driving. I have appx 40 miles of in town driving on this tank. And yes, driving this slow may make me crazy. lol... I think I could have done better by not slip streaming the trucks though. I just wouldn't feel safe going 50-60 in a 70 mph zone.

If your car is otherwise stock, I'd pick getting a tune over the exhaust at first. Injector nozzles or just a tune would be a great way to increase fuel economy as well as make the car a bit more fun to drive.

Something's not right. Timing, fuel injector balance, boost control, something. 600 on 14.5 is only 41.3 MPG. Even driving in a spirited fashion you should be seeing 44-46. My car is modified which may help FE, but I'm seeing 46-48 with traffic, suburban driving, and 75-85 on the highway.

You should find a local guru and have him give your car a once-over. You might be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Filled today after an engine oil and gear oil change.

16.1 gallons, 50.7 MPG. This is the third tank in a row over 50 MPG. It's getting routine.

I finally made the 800 mile club. My first time with this many miles to one tank. I have great respect for those who get 800 or more miles to the tank. This was not fun, but I finally made it using 15.692 gallons of ULSD.
