Well, I'm the one that has always had tanks that have a meager 550 or so miles. But then again I've been using my RCIII and PP520s with lots of vigor!
I have been filling up in Washington with Chevron premium diesel and was seeing a lot better mileage, so I figured that this last tank I'd go for 700 mile club. Well, I set the cruise at 55, and drafted behind semis like I'd done while living in Europe, and enjoyed my trip to Seattle and back. I had 500 miles on the tank and was just below half. So I kept it up; either drafting or driving on the freeway at 50. Last night I told myself that if I hit 730 miles before the fuel light came on I'd try for the 800 mile club. At 735 the light came on, and this morning I took the car out and tried to hit 800...
I filled up with 15.0 gallons, so I had .5 gallons left in my A3 tank (trust me, I ran out in Idaho at 530 miles--worst tank ever! Turbo was bleeding air and after restarting and dying 4x I was able to get into a station. 15.5 gallons on the dot for an A3). Tires were at 38 PSI and everything else was within spec. Vag-Com measured IQ at 4.0, and EGTs were at 450 most of the time. I would accelerate with 3 lbs. of boost, sometimes when I was feeling hot rodish I'd go to 5 lbs. ;)

And since A3's can't show trip and odometer at the same time, this is how many miles were on the car--please no "666" comments ;))

Cheers!

__. I drive an A4. I had to fill up today; only got 823 miles on that tank, it took 15.5 gallons as the light had been on about 40 miles. I was so disappointed but I'd been driving in some tough conditions (slow, entering/ exiting traffic on rural roads, cold temps, rough winds, and some higher-than-usual speeds) so I guess I shouldn't be surprized if my mileage is suffering.

Toss a .68 5th gear and you should be able to get 830+ miles (roughly a 4% increase).

I can only get 14.5 gallons or so into my A3...

...at least without completely running dry and then refilling.

BleachedBora is your pyro pre-turbo or post? Havn't installed one in the TDI yet but our truck runs about 4-500 degrees at the manifold when we get the best economy.

Actually if I really wanted to be technical, my odometer is off by 6.9% because of the very tall tires that I am running. So technically I went 856 miles on this tank! Oh well, such is life.
My EGT is tapped right into the manifold supposedly right where it needs to be to get the most accurate reading.
But yeah, A3's have 15.5 gallons until they are bone dry--supposedly A4s have 16.9, so you have it a lot better than we do Mr. Gutwrench! ;)

What kind of thermcouple did you use to fit in our small manifolds? All the ones I see are either way too long or are the band clamp type.

I am looking for an autometer ultra lite gauge BTW.

I made it today. 809.4 miles on the tank as I pulled into work.
The light came on at roughly the 780-790 mile mark. Boy it sure drops fast from there. Wish someone would fix that. Seems to be the case in every car I've ever driven. I filled up last Thursday morning [06/01]before the drive to work ad put 15.003 gallons in it. I'm going to fill up at lunch time and get the exact MPG rating but It should be around 54.

I'll check back in then.

Congrats BBora, Klufkee & V-rob

Jake's headed there again this tank --> "dinged" at 732. This is my ~10th week and ~5th tank of fuel since swapping to a .681 5th. This vented tank is ~B30, as will be at least the next 2 (still no convenient BD source in Central/SEastern CT).

Pre-swap, I would normally "ding" closer to 679 miles on the average tank.

I am new to this thread and a new TDI owner. I purchased a 2002 Volkswgaon Jetta GLS TDI from the bank that I work for (repo). At the time the vehicle had a 46,000 miles on it, currently 52,000. I made a low offer $11,300.00 and got the vehicle. My plan was to sell it and turn a little profit but fell in love with the car and the mileage so I kept it and sold my truck.

Now for my point.....The best I have done with my Jetta is 41mpg. How are you guys getting in the 50's, is there something wrong with my car? It seems to run great.

Is this a good year Jetta? Any issue's with the vehicle I should watch for?

Any comments would be appreciated,

billjd,

Drive for a tank like you've got a dixie cup full of water on the roof that you don't want to spill. It won't be fun but could get you to the high 40s/low 50s. Really depends on the driving. I just finished my best tank yet today but now I'm going to baseline that with what I hope will be my worst. (But most fun!)

If you still get low numbers while you baby it, there are many experts here who can ask all the right questions to help you.

Could just be driving still however. These cars are very fun to drive at the 41MPG mark.

BTW, congratulations on your purchase, (Incredible deal!), and welcome to the club!

Congrats on the 800 mile club! I wish I could have done better this time around, but due to some unexpected appointments and travel I really had to drive hard in this last tank. I averaged 80-82mph on this last tank on the highway (65%) and very spirited driving around town (35%) and I was was surprised when I avegared 45.08mpg. 667 miles/14.5gal. I am planning to drive to San Diego and back over the next few weeks so I am planning a cruise control journey @ 65mph so I can hope to get to the hard to reach 800 mile blub. Again, congrats on yor achievement.

I did 852 miles this past winter, on D2. But that was with the snows on, so it's a couple of percent high (stock tires are 195/65, snows are 185/65 IIRC). 52.6mpg. Wasn't that much fun, having to coast (in gear) to every stop and shifting at 2k or so, and limiting highway speed to 65 (almost half my commut is highway, the other half 55mph back roads).

Way more fun pulling down 42/43 driving on the highway when I want to make a 3.5 hour trip in under 3 hours...

Filled up before 800, but coulda made it with little to no sweat.

768' / 15.42 gal / 49.8 mpg after a record 52mpg last tank. Reduction was combination of B33 and heavy weekend around-town errands.....full details to show up in the June Mileage Competition thread :)

817 Miles

Did 817 miles on a tank last year driving to indy 500 and back then drove to work the next day too. Had under .3gal left when I filled up.

Did about about 63-65mph(GPS) in cruise mode from cleveland to Indy and back.

Oh! that was in my 2003 tdi wagon w/.205's.

Ditto for the A5 people too. We can't vent.
I've managed 818 mile on 14.9 gallons. Quite a feat for an A5.

another 800+

Just filled up my 2003 tdi Jetta wagon.

803 miles 52.5mpg had 0.2 gal left (assuming 15.5gal. max)
This with a fair amount of city too.

Highway speeds @ 61mph much of the time.

Supposedly the A4s have a 16.9 gallon capacity, I have only confirmed A3's at 15.5 ;)

Just to encourage you to run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere some time, I've put 17.9 gallons (vented) into my 2004 wagon twice and 17+ a good number of times. So you should be into the 900 club easily ;)

Second time now for me 801 miles 15.037 gallons. 53.2 MPG
I drove past the station with 798.4 on the trip odometer, so one quick trip around the block.

Aaron, that's very, very impressive in a modded A3. I haven't gotten even close to that in my A3, just made 800 in my A4.

This maybe a dumb question, but how many kilometers is 800 miles? I regularly get 1200 kms out of a tank of fuel on my 03 Golf TDI.
