2nd Annual DCotC GTG in KC, or possibly Omaha?

i just wanted to start thinking about the next "Dead Center of the Country GTG" after we had such a good time last year in Kansas City. there are at least 4 TDIers in Omaha now, so i'm sure we'd be able to put something together, but i'd hate to make all those loyal KC members drive all the way up here. OTOH, if we have it farther north we might be able to get some of the MN members to come down.

so what do people think? Kansas City again, or another location... possibly Omaha? also, i'd like to see it happen as soon as the weather gets warm, so maybe late April or early May. that way it's eariler than OldNavy GTG and we can have good spacing between them.

Eric:

I vote for Omaha. It appears to be about 60 miles closer to home than KC. BTW, where is the geographical center of the lower 48? Also, will we be throwing the country into an unbalanced state by calling this the DCotC GTG?

it's pretty close, (well in the correct state)

The geographical center of the lower 48 states lies outside of Lebanon, Kansas, in the middle of a hog farm.
The geographical center of all 50 states is located 17 miles west of Castle Rock, South Dakota.

The geodetic center of the U.S. is found approximately 42 miles south of Lebanon, Kansas. (Note: A geodetic survey makes corrections to account for the curvature of the Earth.)

the population center of the country is in Phelps county Missouri. (near Rolla)

Ain't Google fun....

Woofie2 (Allan):

You are just a wealth of info, and probably a good googler too.

On another note, I think the Minnesota (ya der hey!) contingent deserves a little break so lets push north, north to Omaha!!! Its still a ride from the North Star State but every little bit helps.

VikingRob:

Are you swinging down to the Janesville, WI GTG this Sunday? Last time I saw you was at Topol's back in February. Is the NB flying south for the weekend?

Don't we need a better location than a public park! On the subject of
which city..... Pick one, and we will be there!! I'll bet we have a bigger
turnout than last year!!

The schedule doesn't permit this weekend.

i'd hate to throw things out of balance, but i doubt most people are as good with google as woofie, so we'll probably get away with it.

i'll see if i can find an actual location here in omaha. i happened to enjoy the park in KC quite a bit last year, but you're right that it would be nicer to have power, water, a kitchen, real bathrooms... i'll start looking around.

My neighbor and I are buying 30 acres here... I'll have a barn and other things available by next year, so that's a possibility.

Now your talkin'! I seem to remember an old truckin' song....
goes something like:

'Give me 20 acres and I'll turn this rig around...'

Doesn't apply to our TDIs, thank heavens!

Sounds good here. KC or Omaha are a breeze after the trip to Old Navy's.
Might be able to drag much of the MN clubbers down I35.

KC is a little further from the Twin Cities area than Chicago. Omaha is closer than Chicago.

How many people attended the KC gtg last year? A rough estimate may help to see what is needed for this. Would a house be sufficient, or do we need more than that? I have a 3 stall garage, plus room for 5-6 cars on my driveway.

Parking on the street?

There were 38 cars at OldNavy's GTG, (as a benchmark, Rocketchip added to the numbers, but he was running between 20 and 30 people)
He has a two car garage, and parking for 6 in the driveway. and like a three ring circus everywhere you looked there was something going on.
Timing belts and chipping in the garage, with Intake cleanings, oil changes, injector and skid-plate installs in the gravel lot.

last year, 12 cars

there were about 12 cars at about 1pm if i remember correctly, some people got there late, some left early. strangely (and i'm NOT complaining about this) no one else did any work on their cars at all. so everyon there just worked on my car.

jumpn - thanks for the offer of your place. of course i'd prefer the location to be Omaha but most importantly i think we should choose a location/date that will be a good compromise for everyone.

is there a club calendar anywhere? something that shows a list of GTGs or anything like that? otherwise we're just stuck checking all the threads and keeping track ourselves.

Mahoney?

Mr. Erlo, I was wondering about Mahoney State Park. I don't know what costs are involved in renting a shelter, or if there is even anything usable out there. I've only been there once for a Saturn picnic at the large pavilion. Maybe that could be an option?

I just bought my, I mean "our", first TDI. I have been an aircooled guy for a long time and started my own aircooled group last year. Now I'm a TDI guy. I would love to meet up at the next meeting. I have a few good places in mind for meeting sites. I know hardly anything about these confangled computer controlled gizmos. But I can throw a wrench and drink a beer...
