I may be looking to offload my Golf. It has almost 580,000 miles on the body, 200,000 on the engine. The body is in generally good shape. Timing belt was done 20,000 miles ago. It is mechanically sound except for one thing.

The bad: The transmission needs some work. It is a 5-speed but only reverse and gears 1-4 work. Fifth recently went out because of an inadquate level of fluid.

How much could I expect to fetch for the car?

Without pictures, I'd say it's probably going to be somewhere around $500-800, unless it has a fairly new set of tires, which may put it over $1000.

I've had 3 400-600k TDI's and the market isn't as strong as one may think. The 5th gear issue is fairly common after 400k miles, and unless the new owner has a shop, it's usually more cost effective to remove the old transmission, and replace it with a used one, as opposed to tearing down the old one, and replacing 5th gear. Labor costs will be more on a rebuild than a removal and refit.
