Extended warranty Question

Anyone buy an extended warranty on their new TDI JSW?

I just picked up my car on Monday and it was late so when I was offered an extended warranty with a 'money back no usage clause' for $2500 I took it. (I knew not to buy a warranty but since I have 30 days to cancel it free of charge and this being my first VW I decided to get it)

Here are some of my questions:

1) Has anyone dealt (or heard of) Fidelity warranty company?

2) Has anyone heard of these warrantys that if you don't use it before until it expires, you get your $ amount back?

3) I just found out how much the DSG service costs each 40K miles and I'm a bit pissed I didn't check into this before. However, now that I have the car I'm assuming I have to get these or else the extended warranty won't cover any transmission issues that may arise. Is this correct?

I'm planning on going to the dealer this weekend and cancelling it, unless someone on here can really convince me otherwise.

Thanks in advance.

we got a extended warranty offer from the dealer for the same amount, we ask our credit Union who finance our loan and got it for $1100.00 may be ask your bank to see if they have better offer.

thanks for the response. I'll look into it. We are leaning towards not getting an extended warranty at all but for $1100.00 is not a terrible price?

What bank do you use? Is this for 100K miles with a $100 deductable? Is this a return of premium similar to the dealship one or just 'use it or lose it'?

Interesting story in Car and Driver magazine this month on extended warranties.
It seems to me they find more reasons to say no than yes once they have your money.

A local Credit Union in in Oregon call OnPoint Credit Union. $100 deductible and 6 years 100,000 miles, it is transferable if we sell the car.
Not sure what you mean by return of premium question.
regarding saying no more often than yes, I do not know yet.

As you know those extended "warranties" are really nothing more than a high priced insurance policy. I have heard both good and bad about Fidelity. However they all make money for the dealer, the salesman and the insurance company. No one other than you are paying for all that plus the cost of the insurance company to service the policies and pay claims.

I have heard those return on premium deals. Yea, that is just another way to increase the total profit. You will be less likely to make a claim so in the end they know that most people will skip the smaller and mid size claims (which likely a very large amount of their cost and never get that big one.

I added Geico's "Mechanical Breakdown Coverage" to my insurance policy so I now have coverage of everything except routine maintenance items for up to 100,000 miles. It's costing me $74.00/year. The deductible for each breakdown is $250.00 So if I get to 100K in five years I'll have spent $370.00. This is the cheapest "extended warranty" I've seen anywhere.

So if you now have Geico Auto Insurance or if you want to switch to them you can add their Mechanical Breakdown Coverage for much less than any other 'extended warranty' and you have much better coverage.

Roshermoore - Thanks for the information. That seems like a good deal. Have you ever filed a claim with them? Are they easy to deal with?

I don't have Geico right now but I might consider it in the future.

Thanks for posting this information! Those extended plans are much more reasonable and I will be up at my dealer on Saturday to cancel the one I purchased.

I also called my local VW dealer about the DSG 40K service and he quoted about $435 for the service which is better than the 800-1000 I have been reading about.

I starting to get less anxious and can start enjoying my new purchase.

I got the platinum version of the Fidelity with my 2010 JSW from the dealer. The terms I got were four years 100K miles. The price was negotiable. I drive 27k per year and the factory warranty will be gone in 18 months. My plan is to drive the car until it has about 85 or 90K and then sell it with the warranty.

I'm a contactor for Fidelity warrenty, I"m the guy who comes and looks at your claim when the dealer calls it in. I do work for several extended warrenty companies and Fidelity is by far one of the best. I'm not saying it because I work for them, I could give you a list of crap companies I do work for and wouldn't feel bad about bad mouthing them
